Top Royal Baby Girl Names
What are the top royal baby girl names in contention for the new princess born to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? Will the royal baby girl be named Alice, the favorite with bookmakers? Diana, the crowd-pleasing choice? Or Elizabeth, one of the most royal names of all — or maybe something completely different? Here, the seven top contenders:
Alexandra — Alexander was said to be Duchess Catherine’s first choice for her older son’s name, which ended up in middle place. So her preference may predominate this time with Alexandra as a first name for a daughter. There was a Queen Alexandra, consort of Edward VII, who ruled in the early 20th century. Queen Elizabeth II and several other royals bear Alexandra as a middle name.
Alice — The name of Queen Victoria’s second daughter, the princess who shocked her mother by breastfeeding her baby, is a favorite with Britain’s betting public. Alice is a sweet and pretty classic that is currently considered ultra-stylish in England, where it’s in the Top 50, and is also rising in popularity in the US. Alice is the name of Prince Philip’s mother, Prince William’s great-grandmother.
Charlotte — Charlotte would be a top pick for the name of a little princess. It’s a feminization of Charles, the name of the baby’s grandfather, and is also related to the name of Catherine’s mother Carole, plus it’s the middle name of her sister. Queen Charlotte was the cultivated wife of George III, who also had a daughter named Charlotte. We believe Charlotte is more likely as a girls’ name than Charles is for a new little prince. Runner-up is another Charles feminization: Caroline.
Diana – Diana would be a crowd-pleasing favorite, though it’s unlikely to be a choice that pleases the Royal Family. Diana is the name of the Roman moon goddess, also goddess of the hunt. And of course the name of Prince William’s mother.
Elizabeth – It seems a no-brainer that Elizabeth, the name of the current queen and the baby’s great-grandmother as well as that of her great-GREAT-grandmother, would be in there somewhere. But in first, second, third, or even fourth place? Elizabeth is also the Duchess’s middle name.
Mary – Mary is a so-far-out-it’s-in vintage choice, one of our favorites had the couple’s first child been a girl. We think Mary may suit their taste for traditional-with-a-twist. With George, they’ve shown they’re not afraid to dust off a once-fusty name, and they may similarly polish up the image of Mary. Mary was the name of two reigning queens and of three daughters of reigning monarchs; it’s one of Queen Elizabeth’s middle names.
Victoria – One of the most likely choices for a girl, Victoria is the name of one of the most famous queens in British history, who ruled through most of the 19th century. While embodying history and strength, the name continues to feel contemporary, ala friend of the royals Victoria Beckham. But don’t look for her to be nicknamed Tori, or even Vicki.

It’s a girl!!! 😀

There are no close family memebers named Alice, Mary or Victoria so they’re good bets for a first name (depending of course on whether the couple and the Queen like those names). Other regal choices not mentioned are Eleanor and Matilda. Another possibility is Caroline which would honor both Prince Charles and Catherine’s mother Carolyn.

I’m hoping for Victoria Frances Elizabeth!

From the New York Times:
The impending birth has been a boon for Britain’s bookmakers, who say they received thousands of bets on the newborn’s gender and possible name. Even after Saturday’s announcement, bets were still being placed on a name and other characteristics.
Alice and Charlotte are the clear favorites, followed by Elizabeth, Victoria and Diana — all names with royal heritage.
In 2013, the announcement of George’s name came two days after his birth.

I second Victoria Frances Elizabeth! Gorgeous!! My second would be Alice Elizabeth Diana.

Am I the only one who immediately thinks of Mary Queen of Scotts when they hear the first name Mary? With the current Queen of England being an Elizabeth, it seems an ironic choice.

I think the name will be Alice but my favorite is Charlotte. Whichever name they choose I think the middle names will be Diana Elizabeth. Victoria is a beautiful name but I think Victoria’s Secret brings the name down a bit.

Since the little princess is the ‘spare’, her name will be taken as seriously as George’s was. Princess Alice, the Duchess of Gloucester, was much beloved, as was Princess Alice, Prince Philip’s mother, who was actually a member of the Righteous Gentiles enshrined in Israel.
Since this is the year of Gloucester, perhaps Alice wins out over Charlotte, which has become rather common lately; Alice Frances Elizabeth would be lovely.
It would be fun, though, to honour Maud — another “fusty” name that is making a big comeback.

I think it’ll either be Victoria or Alice : )

I think whatever they pick, it won’t be something that seems too “posh”. I love Eleanor and Matilda, but they don’t seem middle class enough. No one’s mentioned Amelia, but it also has a royal history and I think is a possible strong contender. Amelia Mary Elizabeth or Amelia Elizabeth Diana.

Also, isn’t Victoria sort of dated in the UK? I don’t think it’ll be that.

I’m tired of this baby and its naming already. The name choices bore me and I hope they show some cojones and go for Diana.
Though I’d really prefer Magdalen or Viola, something not so safe.
on May 2nd, 2015 at 9:39 pm
Yes, most Victorias here are 30+; Caroline peaked around the same time. Not that this prevented the Wessexes choosing the similarly outmoded Louise, so who can tell?

I really don’t think it will be Alice. The royals are trend setters not followers. I don’t think they are going to want a name that is already popular, though admittedly the name will likely be popular after they pick it so what does it matter? Still I think Diana or Elizabeth as a first is more likely.

I want a little Elizabeth or Victoria SO FREAKING BAD
on May 3rd, 2015 at 1:38 am
I guessed George. And now my guess is Mary

As an Australian, I’m actually sort of hoping for an Adelaide! Or maybe even as a middle name. Perhaps Charlotte Adelaide Elizabeth?
on May 3rd, 2015 at 3:50 am
I second Adelaide as a middle name, but I’m a biased Aussie since it’s my hometown.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 6:55 am
I think they’re going to pick something no one was expecting. I seem to remember with George, George wasn’t a name with very high odds. I’m hoping they go with something similar in style to George, not very popular yet, but can see rising soon. ie. Ingrid, Leonor. Isla would be great! These don’t feel very realistic, but they would definitely be exciting!
on May 3rd, 2015 at 9:18 am
George was actually the bookies’ favorite, at least in the UK.
What’s “fusty” in the US isn’t necessarily so in the UK–George, for example, was the 13th most popular name in the UK when the Cambridges picked it.
I’m hoping for a less obvious classic–Eleanor or Adelaide, though Alice would be nice, too.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 9:46 am
I still like Alice. But now that she’s a May baby, I’m thinking Mary, even Mary Alice Elizabeth — Mae?!!
on May 3rd, 2015 at 9:53 am
I’d really like them to go for Eleanor or Matilda, I can see them being possibilities but not highly likely. I do think it’ll be Alice or Charlotte.I really hope they avoid Victoria, it’s so unbelievably dated, I really can’t stand it, so is Diana but I can see that being a middle name. Elizabeth would be nice but I’m not sure if they’d use it as a first name seeing as it’s the Queen’s name, definite middle name potential.
I think my guess would be Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Caroline (ok, George only has two middles but that hasn’t stopped the royal family in the past).
on May 3rd, 2015 at 12:07 pm
Agree with above commenters- Victoria and Caroline are too dated and, unlike George, Mary is too old fashioned. Charlotte feels unusable to me thanks to Princess Charlotte, who was going to be queen but died in childbirth. I am also hoping for an Eleanor or Matilda. Both popular, like George was. It would be nice if they included a nod to Diana but I don’t think it is likely.
I heard the queen said she didn’t want a namesake.
Alexander is George’s middle name, making Alexandra less likely, whatever the corgi race said. Perhaps they will chose Amelia, popular with has royal history.
Eleanor Alice Matilda, perhaps.
Amelia Lily Adelaide? Going out on a bit of a limb there, but Lily could be used as a nod to Elizabeth…

I envision either Victoria Diana Grace or Charlotte Diana Grace.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 12:44 pm
I believe the two middles name (or at least two the middle names) will be Frances and Elizabeth in honor of Diana and the Queen, respectively. However, I can’t make up my mind for what I think the baby’s first name is. I believe Charlotte, Victoria, or Alexandra would all be beautiful choices. Alice is a lovely name as well, but after seeing pictures of the princess, she doesn’t seem like an Alice to me.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 2:08 pm
I don’t think it will be Alexandra. I think giving two siblings virtually the same names (even if Alexander is just George’s middle name) is kind of tacky. My name is Alice, and I like it, so it would be cute if she was a little Alice. And Charlotte is beautiful, but apparently the name has some bad connotations with the royal family, so they may not use it. I really like Eleanor, and I think it would be a great way to honor Diana (she would have named William Eleanor if he was a girl).
I think William honors Diana in everything he does, so I think he’s off the hook on naming the baby Diana.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 2:57 pm
I do really love the idea of Alice. I also think it would be a no brainer to honor the queen and Will’s mother. Alice Elizabeth Diana?
If they go for something not so expected, I would love Eleanor! Eleanor Elizabeth Diana is a mouthful, but then again all of their names are haha!
on May 3rd, 2015 at 4:11 pm
My preference is for Eleanor since it has the proper lineage but hasn’t been used for a royal in a long time, it isn’t dated but neither is it super popular as Alice apparently has become in the UK. Maud is an intriguing choice as well, it has the proper pedigree and an ancient one and would be a real boon for the name, contemporizing it allowing it too shake off the vestiges of fustiness as the choice of George did with that name. All the choices are fine names but of the front runners I’d rather see Charlotte come out ahead. Diana has zero chance of being the first name but I’d like to see it somewhere in the middle mix.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 4:23 pm
I know many young Victorias that it’s an everywoman name.
I would die of joy if the princess was Annabelle or an Anne name like I predict, very unlikely but I’d love it! I really don’t think it will be Alice though.
on May 3rd, 2015 at 5:54 pm
What about Margaret ? Maggie is such a cute name to me, but is it not cool in the uK because of thatcher?
on May 3rd, 2015 at 6:25 pm
I could see the little peincess being something no one expected. I don’t think the firt name will be elizabeth alexandra diana or charlotte. I think they are to close to family names for the duchess to go with them. I could see a Victoria but seeing as its not terribly popular at the moment in the UK and was probably very popular around the time that prince william and the duchess were born they may have friends with the name.
I also don’t see them going with Alice, it makes a nice pair with George though.
i would like to see Amelia, Mary or Margaret

Changing my mind from Mary Frances to Mary Elizabeth.

Alice Keppel was the longtime mistress of Edward VII and a great-grandmother of Prince Charles’ wife Camilla. I don’t think the princess will be named Alice.
King George III was thought to be mad, and yet that didn’t stop Kate and Will from calling their son George. So likewise, I don’t think a Queen Charlotte dying tragically in the early 19th century will prevent the use of that name.
I think they will at least express an interest to the Queen in using Elizabeth, but they could also use it for Kate as it’s her middle name.
I noticed that William is William Arthur Philip Louis and his son is George Alexander Louis, so maybe the princess will also share a middle name with her mother. (As Kate and her mother Carole Elizabeth Middleton have the same middle name.)
I don’t expect Diana to be used in the name, but more likely Diana’s middle name, Frances. (I will be surprised if neither Frances or Diana is used as a middle name.)
Charlotte Frances Elizabeth would honor both of Prince William’s parents, as well as Kate and her mother. Charlotte is also her sister’s middle name. George and Charlotte would go well together.

Name is in. Charlotte Elizabeth Diana
on May 4th, 2015 at 9:27 am
I am surprised, to be honest! I kept thinking they were going to go with Eleanor. However, I love the name Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Simply stunning, and very fitting for a princess.
on May 4th, 2015 at 9:41 am
Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is almost identical to her cousin Lady Charlotte Diana Spencer, Earl Spencer’s daughter. A safe choice that any imagination or originality. With Diana as her second mn, I would say that the royal family has been pretty successful at wiping the late Princess of Wales out of royal history books.

My post above should read ” a safe choice that LACKS any imagination or originality”. That just goes to show me NOT to post when I’m ticked off. LOL.
