Uriah Origin and Meaning

The name Uriah is a boy's name of Hebrew origin meaning "God is my light".

A perfectly respectable Old Testament name ruined forever through its association with the odious Uriah Heep in David Copperfield. Some people also find this name just too close to the word urine. These negative connotations may be wearing off, however. (Perhaps because people don't read as much Dickens as they used to.)

ParanoidAndroid Says:

I’m just shocked this name is even on the top 1000, especially this high. I can’t complain though, as I can see this name being a quirky, unique one. I just wouldn’t personally choose it, as I’m not a fan of the “iah” endings.

GenEric Says:

I don't mind the sound, but its look is a major turnoff. I first thought urine too.

clairels Says:

Is anyone else as shocked as I am that this name is in the top 1000? Not only does it have a horrible literary connotation, it sounds like "urine." WHAT is the appeal? Seriously, explain it to me.

cmailest Says:

Uriah is such a guilty pleasure name (along with most biblical -iah ending names) for me, but I feel like I can't ever use it because I'm not very religious at all :/ it would be hypocritical of me to even think about naming my future child this name lol! but I love it so much!

TinyTurtle Says:

Uriah is a really great name, and I think the negative associations are really wearing off. I can totally see it taking off in a few years and maybe even breaking top 100.

SQPR Says:

Uriah Heep may not be a pleasant character, but he doesn't ruin this name. Uriah in the Divergent series is a wonderful character, and Uriah is a wonderful name. I would love to meet a little Uriah!

Yeah... I really don't like this name.

alexandramae Says:

it makes me think urethra instead, honestly. close, though.
but, I also pronounce this yer-eye-uh, not you-rye-uh, so it's closer to urine and urethra.

Essa Says:

It depends how you pronounce urine. I know a lot of people say 'you-reen' but I'm from, the common pronunciation is 'you-reye-n' like to rhyme with shrine.

RoddyThlayli Says:

I honestly don't see how this name sounds similar to the word urine . . . . It starts with Ur, but other than that it's not similar at all.
