It would be the same - we considered this spelling for our new little Nikolai because it would be spelled Nikolaj in my husband's first language (but since I'm American we felt that the -j ending would be too confusing). I still like it though!

I like this name but I LOVE the variant Nikolaj which I believe is pronounced the same. the nickname Kolya is also very dashing

I've never really liked the name Nicholas but I LOVE Nikolai and Nicolai. I think it sounds very fresh, modern and has a very Scandanavian and European feel. Also Nico is one of my favourite boys nicknames. I would definitely use this name for a boy. Sophisticated yet fun!

Gorgeous name! A fresh spin on Nicholas which is also another classic name with a long history. The Russian diminutive is Kolya.
