Gender: Female Meaning of Madge: "pearl" Origin of Madge: Diminutive of Margery or Margaret

Madge Origin and Meaning

The name Madge is a girl's name meaning "pearl".

At this point pretty much a joke name, as in TV's commercial waitress, and Madonna nickname--it was how the British tabloids referred to her when she moved to London in the 1990s, which she found annoying until then husband Guy Ritchie said it stood for 'Your Majesty'. Madge Undersee is Katniss's bff in The Hunger Games books.

Midge takes it one step lower on the ladder.

How is Madge a joke name? Is there a reference I'm missing?

We had a budgie called Madge, after Madonna - even though Madonna doesn't actually like the nickname. I think it's a nice nickname, but I wouldn't imagine that it's often used as a given name. Well, other than for budgies...! :-)

There's nothing wrong with this as a nickname in my eyes. Nor really with Midge either.
