Not exactly related to the name, but Nameberry said that Calvino was one of Italo Calvino's middle names, but that's not true. He had one middle name and two surnames. His only middle name was Giovanni, while Calvino was his father's surname and Mameli his mother's. In fact, if you look it up, his father's name was Mario Calvino.

He was born in Cuba which I believe explains why he had two surnames despite that not being common in Italy, since it's customary in Spanish speaking countries to take the mother's surname as well as the father's.
