Gender: Male Meaning of Gwyn: "fair, blessed" Origin of Gwyn: Welsh

Gwyn Origin and Meaning

The name Gwyn is a boy's name of Welsh origin meaning "fair, blessed".

Short, simple, gentle, undeniably Welsh but easy to spell and pronounce - there's a lot to like about this underused gem. In the States it's been almost exclusively female, but it feels like a candidate to reclaim for the boys. Gwyn has exactly the same meaning as his Irish cousin Finn.

I think the double standards go beyond this site to the culture in general.

Giving your daughter a traditionally male name is seen as "cool" or "tough" or something, while giving your son a name that sounds feminine or is used more for girls (even if it was originally male) is looked down on.

You might as well say that John, with its similarity to Joan and Jane, is too feminine to be a boy's name.

I really like this as a boys name, especially spelled Gwin.

I agree. I like this for a boy.

Jesus! EVERYTHING is "too feminine" for boys by your standards, isn't it, Nameberry? Douglas and James are totally cool for girls but because Gwyn has a passing resemblance to Gwen, that means it's inappropriate? Ugh! SOoooooooOOOOoo tired of this site's double standards!
