It's a Dutch name, popular in the mid-20th century, but I found a Gerrit online with the date 1486 after his name. The Dutch pronunciation is with a guttural G and rolling Rs. When I married my Dutch husband (in Florida), the minister said I had to use his real name when we made our vows, so I faked it -- a nice combination of "credit" and "Herod" -- luckily, 43 years later I'm able to say it (almost) correctly.

The only Gerrit I've ever met spelled his name this way. It's said a little differently too which I liked. The Garret spelling looks off to me. ;-)

At first I thought this name was just a creative spelling of Garrett; I had no idea it was a name all by itself.
