Gender: Female Meaning of Enola: "Alone" Origin of Enola: Modern invented name

The name Enola is a girl's name meaning "Alone". Enola and discussed in our forums with posts like "Release the 20 C.O.B.R.A.S. -- the anti-elimination game! (Girls)".

From the experts:

Let's be blunt about this: You should not name a child after the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Enola Gay. Especially since that name was first coined in a poem from a few decades before the bombing; it's not one of those names that has a ton of great connections and one bad one. It just has the bad one.

Actually none of the explanation of this name at Nameberry is even close to the truth. Enola comes from native american and it means Magnolia. The name is a lot older than the atomic bomb. The plane was named after the mother of the pilot.
If you really want to get the facts right, just do some research, for example google "Enola's Rail Yard in Enola, PA". You will find there is a lot more to the name than just a link to a bomb.
The comment by Nola Smith is absolutely correct. The way this name is explained here is wrong and insulting.

Some names have unfortunate connections regardless of their long history, take Adolph for example. People aren't forced to like it or overlook the connection because some others bear this name. Many names are ruined and receive unkind comments, which all of us have learnt to accept

Nola Smith Says:

In the first place I have that name and if you had done some more research you would have known that, in other cultures, the name Enola has other meanings. So, it is very insulting that you are telling anyone seeing this name that it is all tied to horrible things like the Hiroshima bombing done by that plane. And in the second place where did hear that the name Enola means "Alone"?!

-EagleEyes- Says:

This name has a lot of negative connotations: the Hiroshima bombing, the fact that it is alone spelled backwards, and the similarities to Ebola, which is the first thing I thought of when I saw this. Even if this is a family name, I would find another name to use instead.

Electric_Sheep Says:

The Nameberry info is not entirely correct. The name existed long before the Hiroshima bombing and was not coined in a poem a few decades before the bombing. The plane, Enola Gay, was named after the pilot's mother. I have found graves of people named Enola with births as far back as 1857. This could be a family name for someone and I don't think it should be taboo just because Paul Tibbets wanted to honour his mother with the name of his plane.

A very, very unfortunate name for a child born in this decade...
