It literally means "darling"? It is pretty awful, though. I actually like Arlene and Charlene, even though they are dated, but this never sounded great. Not a fan of Marlene, either.

I like Marlene and am OK with Arlene, but oh, Darlene… To me is it one of the ugliest names ever. I guess Marlene benefits from La Dietrich and I knew a nice Arlene once. No such luck for Darlene who sounds like a whiner in a pink twinset.
