Favorite Magical Names

Magical, spiritual, old-fashioned, overall beautiful names. Some of my all time favorites for boys and girls.
  1. Alice
    • Origin:

      German
    • Meaning:

      "noble"
    • Description:

Alice is a classic literary name that's both strong and sweet, ranking in the US Top 100 and popular throughout the western world. Alice is derived from the Old French name Aalis, a diminutive of Adelais that itself came from the Germanic name Adalhaidis, which is composed of the Proto-Germanic elements aþala, meaning "noble," and haidu, "kind, appearance, type."
  2. Amber
    • Origin:

      Word name, English
    • Description:

Though perhaps not as currently stylish as Ruby, Jade, or Pearl, Amber has a colorful history (remember the notorious Forever Amber heroine?). Unfortunately, it does come with the "Amber Alert" connotation for modern parents (and their children).
  3. Amity
    • Origin:

      Latin
    • Meaning:

      "friendship"
    • Description:

Amity--what nicer gift to give your little girl than a name that signifies friendship and harmony? This virtue name is also more rhythmic and feminine than the single-syllable Hope, Faith, and Grace.
  4. Anastasiya
    • Annabella
      • Origin:

        Latin variation of Annabel
      • Meaning:

        "loving"
      • Description:

With the ascent of all names -ella, and even -bella, we predict that Annabella will rise as an alternative for such favorites as Isabella and Angelina. It's possible to spell the name Anabella. Annabel -- along with Anabel, Annabelle, Anabelle, and Annabell -- are potential alternatives.
    • Anthony
      • Origin:

        Latin
      • Meaning:

        "from Antium"
      • Description:

Substantial, strong, and enduring, Anthony has remained a perennially popular name over the last century. With just a hint of playfulness and just a touch of clunky-coolness, Anthony is a versatile choice that seems comfortable anywhere.
    • Archer
      • Origin:

        English
      • Meaning:

        "bowman"
      • Description:

Archer is an Anglo-Saxon surname that feels more modern than most because of its on-target occupational and Hunger Games associations. And it's a nice way to bypass the clunky Archibald to get to the cool nickname Archie.
    • Arielle
      • Origin:

        French variation of Ariel
      • Meaning:

        "lion of God"
      • Description:

While not as popular as the Ariel spelling of Little Mermaid fame, this rendition has achieved popularity in its own right.
    • Asher
      • Origin:

        Hebrew
      • Meaning:

        "fortunate, blessed, happy one"
      • Description:

Asher—an excellent, soft and sensitive Old Testament choice—is a baby boy name on the rise, and is a Nameberry biblical favorite.
    • Astara
      • Astra
        • Origin:

          Latin
        • Meaning:

          "stars"
        • Description:

A starry-eyed, intergalactic name, far rarer than Stella or Esther. It's attached both to a comic book character and to Princess Astra on "Doctor Who".
      • Autumn
        • Origin:

          Season name
        • Description:

Crisp and colorful, Autumn is the most popular season name now -- the only one in the Top 100 in recent years -- with Autumn's coolness only surpassed by Winter. Jennifer Love Hewitt named her daughter Autumn James.
      • Alisabeth
        • Arachne
          • Beatrix
            • Origin:

              Latin
            • Meaning:

              "she who brings happiness; blessed"
            • Description:

Beatrix has a solid history of its own apart from Beatrice, with that final x adding a playful, animated note to the name's imposing history.
          • Belle
            • Origin:

Short form of Isabelle or French
            • Meaning:

              "beautiful"
            • Description:

Belle has nothing but positive associations, from "belle of the ball" to "Southern belle" to the heroine of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. As if this weren't enough good things, Belle is also one of the most familiar and usable names that mean beautiful. Though it has been overshadowed by the Twilight-influenced Bella and longer forms like Isabella and Annabella, Belle has its own Southern charm and would make a pretty choice as a first or middle name.
          • Blair
            • Origin:

              Scottish
            • Meaning:

              "dweller on the plain"
            • Description:

In the USA, Blair is gaining momentum, rising quickly for the last 10 years and likely to continue to climb. In England and Wales, where Blair has political connotations – calling to mind former prime minister Tony Blair – it is much less common, although it is in use for boys in its native Scotland.
          • Blythe
            • Origin:

              English
            • Meaning:

              "happy, carefree"
            • Description:

Blythe originated as a nickname for an upbeat person, coming from the Old English word bliðe, meaning "merry" or "cheerful." Today the homophone blithe shares the same meaning. Blythe was eventually adapted to a surname before it became a feminine given name.
          • Casper
            • Origin:

              Dutch form of Jasper, Persian
            • Meaning:

              "bringer of treasure"
            • Description:

This ancient name, also spelled Caspar, is finally shedding its ghostly image and moving into the 21st century. Popular in the Netherlands and Scandinavia, where it's sometimes shortened to Cas, Casper could ride the style coattails of cousin Jasper. Casper was one of the Three Magi who brought gifts to the infant Jesus along with Melchior and Balthasar.
          • Celeste
            • Origin:

              Latin
            • Meaning:

              "heavenly"
            • Description:

Celeste is a softly pretty and somewhat quaint name with heavenly overtones, which kids might associate with Queen Celeste of Babar's elephant kingdom. She's a light and lovely choice that's finally getting noticed.
