Husky Names

A short form of the modern coinage Icelyn that feels cool as a short form, but too frosty for a full name.

Ice officially joined the baby name pool when rapper Gucci Mane chose it for his son, born in December 2020. It briefly ranked for girls in 2021, but has since been predominantly, though very quietly, used for boys. The name the rapper and his wife Keyisha Ka'oir Davies chose for their daughter, however, Iceland, has proved more popular. Iceland is on the rise for girls, while similar Icelynn entered the Top 1000 in 2024.

One thing to bear in mind with this name: ICE is associated with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an acronym that is known outside the States too. Icelynn or Icelyn may then be better options, though there's always vintage Icie to consider, which ranked in the Top 1000 from 1881 to 1913, and there's the mystical Eirlys and Isolde too, with their wintery meanings.

Hedda is a card-carrying member of the league of older, slightly bohemian urban names like Nedda, Andra, and Petra; also linked to Ibsen heroine Hedda Gabler, as well as being the basis of cruel joke names like Hedda Hare.

Hedda Hopper was a gossip columnist who covered Hollywood during its Golden Age. Born Elda, she changed her name to Hedda on the advice of a numerologist.

Zingy and energetic, Zippy is a lively nickname that doubles up as a word name too. For a more classic, grounded origin, you could look to the Biblical Zachary — or for rarer full forms, perhaps to Zebedee, Cyprian, Zephaniah, Zeppelin, Zephyr, or Zebulon might appeal. Alternative, you could see it as a word name, associated with jubilance, energy, speed, and brightness.

While Zippy has never ranked in the US stats, it could fit in with the likes of Ziggy, Ozzy, Tripp, and Teddy.

Best associated with the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, this distinctive option brings to mind radiant and colorful light displays in the night sky. Olwen is a Welsh favorite, the name of a legendary princess in what is believed to have been the earliest Arthurian romance, and in fact one of the first recorded examples of Welsh prose.
In this tale, Cuthwch and Olwen, the giant's beautiful and gentle daughter Olwen has the magical power to cause white clovers to spring up wherever she walked--an enchanting image. There's a darker side to the story too, in which Olwen's marriage curses her father to die.
Olwen is a Bronwen alternative for those with a taste for the more unusual. Those who like Olwen might also want to consider such other Welsh girls' names as Anwen, Rhonwen, and Nolwenn.
24's Xander Berkely and Sarah Clarke used the Olwyn spelling for their daughter.

Oreo is a masculine name derived from the famous sandwich cookie brand introduced in 1912. As a given name, it represents a modern trend of naming inspired by consumer products and pop culture.

The word itself may have originated from the Greek word 'oreos,' meaning 'beautiful' or 'nice,' though the cookie name's exact etymology remains disputed. While extremely uncommon as a human name, Oreo has gained some popularity as a pet name, particularly for black and white animals.

When used for children, it carries playful, sweet associations but may present challenges due to its strong commercial identification. The name's distinctive sound and recognizable reference make it memorable, though its usage remains rare and unconventional.

Mountain names such as Everest and Denali are being used more frequently, but Mountain itself was unknown until Hunger Games star Jena Malone used it as a middle name for her son Ode Mountain. Moose is an unconventional masculine name derived from the North American mammal. As a given name, it emerged from nickname usage, typically assigned to individuals with large, strong builds or gentle personalities reminiscent of the animal. The name carries associations of strength, imposing presence, and a connection to wilderness and nature. While extremely rare as a legal first name, it has occasionally appeared as a nickname for athletes and other public figures. The name reflects a contemporary trend toward bold, nature-inspired naming choices. Moose projects a masculine, rugged image while simultaneously conveying a certain playful, approachable quality. It remains outside mainstream naming statistics but may appeal to parents seeking distinctive, memorable names with strong character associations.

A daring word name with a touch of mystique, Shadow is an edgy choice for a baby that some may say is best reserved for pets. Nevertheless, it has been appearing in the US stats for girls since 1974 and for boys since 1987.

It was at its peak in 1993, when 22 girls and 36 boys recieved the name, (possibly thanks to the release of the Honda Dodge Shadow range or the apperance of Shadow, the golden retriever in Disney's 1993 Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey). In a more recent year, it was chosen for 6 girls and 14 boys in the US.

Borne by characters in the show and book American Gods and in the game franchise Sonic the Hedgehog, it has similar vibes to Raven, Moon, and Jinx, and similar sounds to Shiloh, Marlow, Shay, and Shannon.
