Mythological Names

A name rich in Hindu tradition as the alternate name for the Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of beauty and charm; currently borne, appropriately, by model-actress-writer Padma Lakshmi.

Padma

Phyllis has been used by classical poets for the idealized pastoral maiden. A Greek mythological name of a woman who was turned into an almond tree, Phyllis was in the Top 100 from 1916 to 1958, reaching #24 in 1929, and has the (remote) possibility of joining other revived s-ending names like Iris. In the 'St Clare' book series by Enid Blyton Phyllis is nicknamed Fizz. Just a thought.
Phyllida is a variation that sounds at once more old-fashioned and more stylish.

Lugh is the Irish god of the harvest, who also rules over truth, the law, and the arts. His magic includes a fiery spear and a boat that sails itself (dubbed the "wave sweeper") and his inventions include horse racing.

In Greek mythology, Amalthea is the name of a goat (or, sometimes, a goat-keeping nymph) who nursed the infant Zeus and protected him from his murderous father, Cronus. Thanks to the goat’s protection and nourishment, Zeus grew up to overthrow Cronus.
The constellation Capra (meaning "she-goat") is believed to represent Amalthea, and one of Jupiter’s moons also bears her name.

In Peter S. Beagle’s fantasy novel The Last Unicorn, Amalthea is the name of the protagonist (the
unicorn) in her human form. The character was played in the 1982 animated film adaptation by Mia
Farrow.

Amalthea

Name of the Roman goddess of harvest and grain, appropriate for a fall baby. And a palindrome too!

Anona

Made cool by that final X (as seen in Felix, Lennox, and Rex), Pollux is the Romanized form of Polydeukes, the half-twin of Castor, and the son of Zeus and Leda. Associated with the Gemini constellation, the name means "very sweet".

While Castor is held back by the oil, parents may be put off Pollux by its similarity to words like pollock, polyps, pollution, and pox — and with its almost rhyme, beginning with B.

If you can look past that, as a handful of parents in the US have been doing since at least 2008, it could make an unexpected way to honor a Paul or a Polly and a way to nicknames Lux and Lockie.

Pollux

Sylvanus or Silvanus was the Roman god of the forest whose name is much more often found today in such variations as Sylvia, Sylvie and even Silas than in its original form. But if you're looking for a genuine mythological or Ancient Roman name with a nature connection, this might be the perfect choice.

Sylvanus

Pretty and soulful name of a goddess from Irish mythology and several Irish saints. Singer Enya, born Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, has made the Anglicized spelling familiar. Eithne comes from the vocabulary word "kernel", which was used as a term of praise in old bardic poetry.

The name can be pronounced EN-ya, but ETH-na and EHT-na are also used.

Halie is the name of several figures in Greek mythology, most of them sea nymphs.

The most prominent mythological Halie was the mother of Rhodos, who gave her name to the island Rhodes, and six sons by Poseidon. Another was called the "ox-eyed Nereid" and yet another mated with a serpant.

In contemporary English-speaking lands, Halie will be equated with more modern names Hayley, Hallie, Hailey et al.

Khione

The name of the Inuit goddess of the sea, marine animals, and the underworld. There is also a dwarf planet in the outer solar system called 90377 Sedna, discovered in 2003 and named after the goddess because: "Our newly discovered object is the coldest, most distant place known in the Solar System, so we feel it is appropriate to name it in honor of Sedna, the Inuit goddess of the sea, who is thought to live at the bottom of the frigid Arctic Ocean."

Sedna

Cerelia is a melodic and unusual choice, perfect for a child born in April or May. Another version is Cerella.

Despite the possibility of gender confusion, the Hero in Greek myth was a woman. Myleene Klass got that when she chose Hero for her daughter, and Sam Taylor-Wood and Aaron Johnson used it as their daughter's middle--and we wouldn't be surprised to see more girls with this heroic name.
In Greek legend young Leander swam across dangerous waters every night to court his beloved Hero. In Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Hero is the love interest of Claudio and cousin of Beatrice.

This Hindu goddess name is very popular in India. The goddess of love, fertility and devotion, representing female force, Parvati is the wife of Shiva and the mother of Ganesh. There is a Harry Potter character named Parvati Patil, a twin sister of Padma..

This slight but strong name is enjoying new visibility thanks to bestselling mystery writer Tana French.

Themis was the Titan — one of the Elder Gods (or in this case Goddesses) — of Justice and Order, usually depicted blindfolded and holding the scales of justice. The mother of the Fates and the seasons, Themis may appeal to fans of mythology, but also to those who want a name that conveys balance and order.

Pronounced as TEH-MEES in classic Greek and as THEE-mis in English, it could work as a highly unique alternative to Thea, Aurora, Artemis, and Athena. Given to five girls in a recent year, it has only ever appeared in the US stats 3 times, though it has seen more use in Brazil, Greece, and Cyprus.

Themis
