Place Names for Babies: Malaysia’s Hot, Argentina Only Warmish

baby name Malaysia

The website Swimmingly recently published this very cool infographic on which place names were used for the most babies in the US in 2013.  The surprising results: Malaysia is the hottest place name for babies, beating out America, India, and yes, Sierra Leone. (And yup, there was a pop culture connection–the Malaysia on the reality show Basketball Wives LA.)

Malaysia?? I don’t know what to say to be honest.

Malaysia (and basically all other place names) is so common where I live. Which is quite annoying.

Why would anyone name their kids after countries though. Didn’t expect Malaysia to be so popular.

I love Holland for a girl, probably because it’s close to another girls name I like: Hollis. Also, the actress, Holland Roden may have something to do with it – she’s gorgeous.

I can’t be the only one who thinks any place with ‘land’ in it sounds completely ridiculous as a baby’s name. These parents ought to try visiting some of these places- I bet they’d soon change their minds.

And England’s flag is not a Union Jack.

I actually know a little girl, about six years old, named Cyprus!

The only one I’d use is Holland, for some reason it’s the only one I can see as a name – maybe because of Holland Roden?

I love both India and Ireland as names, I’m still surprised Malaysia beat them both out. Also though I certainly would not use it, I see Holland as an adorable name.

I like Ireland and Holland, but I would only use them as middle names. 🙂 I’m surprised that Syria was on the list and not Persia.

I have always loved Denmark for a boy. Don’t see it on this list.

@AlexandrianScrolls: I like Holland and Ireland as place names as well. As for Syria…given what’s going on there, why would anyone want to name their child Syria right now? :/

Other place names I like are:
Boys:
Cairo
Israel
Jordan
London
Boston
Phoenix (Arizona)
Tennessee
Hudson (the Hudson River in New York, my birthplace)
Austin
Dublin

Girls:
Brooklyn
Madison (Wisconsin)
Alaska
Juneau (Alaska’s capital)
Savannah
Georgia (the state)
Berlin
Charlotte
Sydney
Victoria
Dakota
Cheyenne

For boy place names, I forgot to include Jackson and Raleigh.

I actually really like Ireland as a name. I’d like India if every third girl in my area wasn’t named it. I never liked China or Asia as names (2 of the most common names around me) but I do love the Italian pronunciation of Asia. I think Argentina is very cool. My mom once said Brazil was tacky as a first name but I still love it!
