Classic Boys’ Names: What’s your favorite?
Last week we asked you to name your favorite classic name for girls; now it’s the boys’ turn.
There are quiet classic boys’ names such as Robert and Richard and John, no longer quite in style yet undeniably classics. And then there are trendy names such as Noah and Sebastian that may or may not qualify as classics in your book.
What’s your very favorite classic boys’ name? And yes, sure, you can mention more than one.
Which boys’ names do you think qualify as classics and which are not quite there yet?

Is Leo classic? If so, I’d say Leo & Frederick. James is another, but oh boy, this was a tough question. I also like William, John, Michael, & Matthew.

Andrew, John, Thomas, and Peter!

I have a special place in my heart for Frederick for some reason.
I just classics by their history and how long they’ve been used, thousands of years and uncommon to the last hundred years and still common. What have you.
Angelo is my all time favorite boy name. At the top of my list
followed by Leo/Leonardo
Albert (I wouldn’t use it but it’s very stately)
Luca but not Luke nor Lucas
Paolo but not Paul

I love classic names. To me, classic named have an Olde English feel. These are a few of my favorite boys names. (Happily, they happen to be classics!)
on January 28th, 2015 at 3:03 am
Definitely Patrick, followed by James.
on January 28th, 2015 at 3:18 am
Edward sounds extremly suitable for a gentlemen and I also like Peter.

I’d say Sebastian is classic, he’s no2 on my boy’s list. My no1 Tobias, I love, but I’m not sure if he counts as classic…
The only other names on my list I might give the label classic to are Alexander and Arthur.
on January 28th, 2015 at 6:34 am
My all-time favorite classic is Vincent. It’s so recognizable, never wavers too much in popularity, but they aren’t running around everywhere. It works in multiple languages, has curt nicknames, and some lovely namesakes…what more could you want?
I also love Theodore “Theo” at the moment, but I think everyone else does too. Francis is another favorite, but I’d only use it in the middle due to teasing potential. Leo, Luke, Benjamin, and William are high up on the list, too.

My quintessential classic male name is James. One syllable, suitable at all ages, and feels soft & strong and fresh & old.
on January 28th, 2015 at 7:15 am
James, Frederick, Edgar, William, and John. 🙂

Classic names are the only names I consider for future sons.
I really like Biblical names: Adam, Isaac, Joseph, Gabriel.
I also like Albert and Alexander
I am not overly thrilled with really common classics like: William, John, Michael, Thomas. They are not bad names just really over used.
on January 28th, 2015 at 8:30 am
So many wonderful Classic boy names!!
on January 28th, 2015 at 8:31 am
Henry and George.
on January 28th, 2015 at 8:43 am
It has to be Samuel, with James and John very close in equal second.
I also love Edward, Jack and Alexander.
Gabriel and Sebastian too, if they count as classic.
on January 28th, 2015 at 9:12 am
Edward, Samuel, and George. I can’t pick just one!
on January 28th, 2015 at 9:15 am
Elijah, Luca and Jude! I think they’re all classic in my books and my top 3 boy names.
on January 28th, 2015 at 9:28 am
William, Patrick, Thomas and Bennett.
on January 28th, 2015 at 10:00 am
With 4 boys I’ve had a chance to use 8 of my (and hubbys) favorite classics:
I also like Thomas, Henry, John, Peter, Nicholas and Isaac.
on January 28th, 2015 at 10:45 am
James, William, and (should be considered a classic) Zachary. Thomas and Paul are close behind.
on January 28th, 2015 at 11:08 am
My dad’s name is Robert and I love it. Strong but not macho and it has many nicknames. Even Bob has grown on me, though I prefer Rob and Robbie.
Gordon, Michael, Roland, Roger, and Rutherford are other family names I consider classics.
I also love Clarence, Edmund, Galen, Laurence, Ebenezer, Fenton, Chester, Perry.
Boys names thrill me now after a life of obsessing over female names.
on January 28th, 2015 at 12:29 pm
My utmost favorites:
Gregory, also Gregor
Franklin (not FRANK)
David (swoon! but I can’t ever have it bc David is the twin brother of my FIL, Daniel, and that would NEVER fly!)
Christopher nn Kit (although my brother’s name is Kristopher nn Kris)
Ezra (maybe not “classic” but Biblical!)
Corbin (love this so much, but don’t think anybody would considered it classic)

So many (again)! My favourite favourites (:p) are nearer the top.
on January 28th, 2015 at 2:34 pm
My son is Thomas, and my daughter would have been George, had she been a boy. When I was naming my kids, all my friends were doing the whole Jessica/Jason routine.
I’ve always loved the classic boys’ names.
George, William, Thomas, Frederick, Louis, Edmund, Joseph, Hugh, Philip, David, Michael, Robert, Roger, Albert, Alexander, Edward, Archibald, Colin, Humphrey, Patrick, Geoffrey, Wilfred, Barnaby, James, Jonathan, Peter, Pascal.

Joseph is my favorite. I think it is handsome.
Gabriel is my newborn’s name. I love it.
Sebastian sounds handsome, and is on my short list, but I never considered it a classic before.
Henry is a classic and is growing on me, but I really doubt I’d ever use it.
on January 28th, 2015 at 3:44 pm
My all time favorite classic name and boy name in general is Jonathan. I adore everything about it. Other classic names I love include:

Henry is by far my favorite, but I also like:
…and I’m sure a few more!

Classic names are very popular with boys – always have been. And while your average James, Michael, George and Alexander will always have my respect as ancient and sophisticated classics, I will be honest by admitting that they do bore me. Seeing and hearing the same names repeated over and over and over again becomes tedious after a time and, sadly for me, makes your average classics less distinctive and thus less attractive as a result.
Having said all that, I tend to favour classics which have since been lost within the fabric of time. Angelico, Emlyn, Auberon, Phineas, Cecil, Ignacy, Peregrine, Orpheus, Sylvester, Ambrose, Jolyon, Llywelyn, Maredudd, Tiberius etc. – are all very interesting, intelligent, elegant, charming, charismatic and innovative in and of themselves.
on January 28th, 2015 at 6:09 pm
I’d say Edward, Adam and Theodore are my favourites. Really loving Edward at the minute!
on January 28th, 2015 at 6:10 pm
How could I forget Henry!? Love Henry. I’d happily have two sons called Henry and Edward.
on January 28th, 2015 at 6:19 pm
James!!! He’s my number one. I also love Frederic, Charles, John, Edward, and Lionel (if he counts)
on January 28th, 2015 at 6:28 pm
Despite its popularity I love Henry the most. Arthur, Charles, and William are other favorites.
on January 28th, 2015 at 6:30 pm
James & Arthur
on January 28th, 2015 at 8:25 pm
Sebastian and Nathaniel rank pretty high for me.
on January 28th, 2015 at 8:31 pm
Classics I love (excluding ones I have already used already)
I have a lot of Victorian and quirky vintage favs that some say are classics but I keep classic reserved for names that have never gone in and out of style. Names that have fallen off the charts in popularity for years I don’t consider classic.
on January 28th, 2015 at 9:07 pm
My husband and I have picked very classic names to use whenever we have sons! Our first will be William James, after my husband, father-in-law and grandfather (William) and my dad and his father (James). We also have Oliver Wade (Wade being a family name on my mother’s side) and Henry Levi.

I adore Vincent! It’s such an underused classic, but very masculine and saintly. And it’s supremely cool, from its meaning to its general vibe. I am very keen on using this for a future son, without a doubt!
Hugh is also a classic boys name that I love. And it’s even more underused than Vincent, which in my book is a very good thing. It has the most upper class vibe to it without being pompous. And I love its meaning. Also a future must for a son of mine someday.
I’d be very happy with two little boys named Vincent and Hugh 😀

I think James is the only classic boy name I really like…on that note I also like Jamison but is that a classic? If we have a boy his first name will be John but only for family reasons and he would go by his middle name.
on January 28th, 2015 at 11:42 pm
My favourite boys’ name is definitely Callum, but I’m not sure I would group it as distinctly classic as it isn’t well known/ widely used in this country.
Classic classics I love are Nathaniel, Arthur, Nicholas, and recently, Wilfred and Edward. Of these, I like Nathaniel and Nicholas best and would probably only use these two as first names.

I love classic boys’ names, especially those with Biblical roots.
I have a question for you Berries. (And no, I don’t know the answer myself.) Do you consider all Biblical names “classics”? Certainly, they are old. But many have not enjoyed widespread usage until lately — or at all. Therefore, are names like Asher, Ezra, Zebulun, Gideon, Micah, etc. truly classics? What do you think?
Here are my own favorite classic boys’ names:

I’ve been really loving Benjamin lately. It will probably be #1 on my list if I have another boy. It’s such a lively name.
on January 31st, 2015 at 9:22 pm
James, Henry, and Peter are some of my favorites. I like Alfred and Wilfred, but I prefer just Alfie to Alfred.

My favorite classic names in no particular order: Henry, Alexander, Theodore, Gabriel, Nicholas, Arthur, Benedict, Colin, Julian, Oliver, Edward, Frederick. I tried to stick to the names that would definitely be classified as classic VS. more non-core classics such as Sebastian, Emmett, Quentin etc.
