Tyge Origin and Meaning

The name Tyge is a boy's name of Danish origin meaning "thunder; luck, fortune, chance".

The modern Tyge, also found in other European countries as Tygo, Tyko, Tage, and Tycho, can be considered a form of the Old Norse Tóki, a diminutive for any names containing the Thor element. In turn, it is related to the thunder god, giving the name a mythology connecting and a stormy vibe.

Alternatively, it might be related to Tycho, Tyche, or Tychon, Ancient Greek names meaning "luck, fortune" or "hitting the mark", giving the name an air of success and confidence. A famous 16th century Danish astrologer was called Tycho Brahe, which adds history to the name.

Tyge might, very occasionally, also be used as a short form of Tyger (Tiger) or as an alternative spelling to the Irish Tadhg ("poet").
