Sahasra
Sahasra Origin and Meaning
Sahasra is a rising Sanskrit name with a powerful sound and plenty of significance within Hindu tradition. Rarely used in the US before 2005, it has been given to at least 50 girls each year since then.
As a word, Sahasra means "one thousand" and was used as a unit of Count data in the Vedic (or ancient) period of India. In this context, it may also be connected a Sanskrit hymn, the Vishnu Sahasranama, a sacred Hindu ode which includes a a list of the 1000 names of Vishnu.
In a similar way, Sahasra is also linked to the goddesses Lakshmi and Lalita, as it appears in the title of the religious text, the Lalita Sahasranama which celebrates the 1000 names of the mother goddess, who is sometimes equated with Lakshmi.
The name may also be connected to the idea of infiniteness, as it relates to the Sahasrara chakra, located in the crown area of the head and literally translating to a "thousand-petalled" lotus. More figuratively, the name is supposed to indicate infinite awareness and spiritual connection, along with the unrivalled light from the sun.
Notable bearers of the name include actress and influencer, Sahasra Reddy, YouTuber Sahasra Honey, and artist Sahasra Shree, while its initial increase in use may be down to the 2005 Telegu-language movie, Anukokunda Oka Roju ("Unexpectedly, one day"), which featured a character called Sahasra.
