Ganymede Origin and Meaning

The name Ganymede is boy's name meaning "glad thought".
In Greek mythology, Ganymede was Trojan youth who was so beautiful that he was carried off to be Zeus' cup-bearer, and made immortal. His name may derive from Greek ganymai "to be glad" plus medomai "to think, to plan".

In astronomy, Ganymede is also the name of the largest moon of Jupiter. And in Shakespeare's comic play As You Like It, Ganymede is the name the heroine Rosalind chooses for herself when she disguises herself as a shepherd boy.
