Theon Origin and Meaning

The name Theon is a boy's name of Greek origin meaning "godly".

Theon, an ancient name attached to a noted Greek teacher of mathematics and astronomy, also father to the first woman mathematician, might appeal to parents in this field. You can think of Theon as Theo with something a little extra.

Theon is also the name of a major character in Game of Thrones -- albeit a rather notorious character, Theon Greyjoy, who is known as Reek after undergoing months of brutal torture at the hands of sadist Ramsay Snow.

Game of Thrones is overrated people geez. Theon is a great name.

Ziraleet Says:

Anyone concerned about the GoT association, you should be. The character acts cowardly on many occasions, along with the fact that he has been, well...his penis was cut off, and he was horribly tortured. He was tortured so much that it's the only thing I can think of when I hear this name. In one of the recent episodes, he ran instead of trying to save his sister, Yara/Asha. HIS PENIS WAS CUT OFF for goodness's sake. He was brainwashed, and controlled, and broken into a thousand tiny pieces. Please, this is what everyone will think of when they hear your son's name. It is a very beautiful name, but it triggers a very distinct response in most GoT fans, more so then names like Arya, Sansa, etc. Because those names don't make you think of distinct, horrible events. I can't control y'all, and I wouldn't try to, but please. Don't do it.

Beautiful name that's unfortunately been made unusable

I was just reading comments on what people thought of Khaleesi when I thought of Theon. It is a lovely name, traditional sounding but modern- which of course is so popular right now. So I came to see what people think of this one and I agree. If I fell in love with the name the GoT connotation will pass. But it also has real world context to it as well, making it very practical and moving it up on my list. There are still plenty of Adolf's around because the name has centuries of history behind it. Bellatrix might be a star but it has only been used for one person (as far as I know) which is why the connotation is so strongly negative by association.

I am starting to like Theon. It's a cute name with the nn Theo. I don't care about the overrated show it is connected to, and will soon fade so that isn't a problem for me.

Theon, I like this name. Not bothered at all by the GoT association.

headintheclouds Says:

Purely looking at the name itself, Theon is a handsome name with roots that has the combined appeal of Theo + Leon, and has that succinct two-syllable n-ending quality that is so popular today. I really love the sound of it, and it's definitely one of nicer GoT names along with Sansa, Yara, Arya and Brienne. Of course, the downside is the association with the Game of Thrones character, along with the unpleasant events that have befallen said character.

autumnreverie Says:

I think I prefer Theron to Theon.

Floris Says:

After game of hrones this is a big nono to me.
Some people say naming one's kid Bellatrix is too "murderous". Well, Theon is muuuuch worse... It involves explicit torture, murder, genital mutilation, brainwashing....
