Princess Hockey Says:

I know a Kateri! It's a beautiful name! It is pronounced kah TEE ree although people frequently say kah tAIR ee

Memitim Says:

I know what you mean. I lived near Kahnawake (Mohawk Rez). The non natives pronounce it as written with the K sound. I try to teach them the K sounds like G... they think I’m full of it but anyway... btw I’m not Native American but I love this name. I was thinking of naming a future daughter Kateri but changing the spelling to Katerry or Katerrie. I’m hoping the double R will stop people from mispronouncing the name. Because first time I read it was correct (English version). In any case I’m using it for a character in a novel I’m completing.

briannaiscool96 Says:

Proper pronunciation of this name is Gah - dah - lee. The K makes a G sound in the Mohawk language, T is a D, and R is an L. Aboriginal languages don't always follow English so keep this in mind because if you say Kah-tear-ee, it's technically wrong. I won't get into the politics of naming your kid an aboriginal name if you're not aboriginal, but at least pronounce it right.

pam Says:

I just added the correct pronunciation: it's ka-TEER-ee. But yes, many assume it's cattery which leads to the problem outlined below by Katerie It's a beautiful name but it would be annoying to deal with this all the time.

Katerie Says:

I'm called Katerie (slight variation) and I get called 'cattery' all the time! I've never met anyone who can pronounce my name first time round!! I've grown to hate it and now at 24 people just call me Kate out of ease!

snowsbeloved Says:

I really want to like this but I keep hearing "cattery" in my head. Am I pronouncing it right?

S.E.K.S Says:

Mine too! It's such a beautiful name!

Alsace Says:

When I was a kid I remember wanting to name a future daughter Kateri. I forgot about it once I actually had my daughter though... Maybe in the future :)
