Gender: Female Pronunciation: EH-del-vice; AY-del-vice Meaning of Edelweiss: "noble white" Origin of Edelweiss: Flower name, from German

Edelweiss Origin and Meaning

The name Edelweiss is a girl's name meaning "noble white".

Edelweiss, made famous by the Rogers and Hammerstein song in "The Sound of Music", is a rare female name. In German 'edel' means 'noble' and 'weiss' means 'white'. Edelweiss is the colloquial name for the Leontopodium alpinum, a small white mountain flower sometimes used in herbal folk medicine. In this age, though, Edelweiss might make a better name for a white cat than for a little girl.

My first daughter’s name is Clementine, and our youngest is Edelweiss. Very loved names :))

JossieChris Says:

Considering this for a middle name for Clementine. Musical theater buff. I love the song and the movie makes me think of family and watching this at Christmas at the foot of my grandparents bed with all my cousins. Evokes such wonderful memories and feelings. And with the arts and music being so under scored I would like to see my love of it live on in my child. I want to sing "you look happy to meet me" when she is born. I think it pairs nicely with a nature first as some will assume Clementine is.

I did use it in real life. I would say it's more of a brave choice (but i am a little eccentric), i've never heard anyone else use it. And yes, she'll probably get the song her whole life....although a lot of people my age have been deprived and have never seen the movie. I sure that will be even more common with her generation

gmdx Says:

I know I couldn't use it in real life, but just imagine singing Edelweiss to your infant daughter, because that is the sweetest thing I can think of right now.
