I agree that Davis is much better than Davies as a name. Americans always botch pronunciations anyhow. I won't even get started about Ivan, it drives me up a wall when people say eye-van!

That's fine. The name is Welsh, so the proper pronunciation is (and always will be) "Day-vis". America's Davis derived from Davies as British settlers dropped the 'e' to make it phonetic.

All this aside, it is still a lastname-as-a-firstname that does not work.
