Gender: Female Origin of Arrietty: Literary name, variation of Harriet

Arrietty Origin and Meaning

The name Arrietty is a girl's name .

A pretty, dainty name for one of the little characters in the children's book series The Borrowers. It was the basis for a later Studio Ghible animated film, The Secret World of Arrietty. While the connection to Harriet is tenuous, you might want to consider Arrietty as an honorific for an ancestral Harriet, Harry, or even Henry or Henrietta.

It sounds fine if you pronounce it AH-ree-ETT-y. I'm pretty sure it's pronounced like this in the 1992 BBC adaptation of ''The Borrowers''.

I have considered using this as a pen name since 2017. It's a unique, whimsical name with a positive literary connection. If I ever succeed in my dream of becoming a Young Adult fantasy writer, there's a high chance I will use Arrietty as my name. (Another ''A'' name I really like is Adeline, but it's a bit too popular at the moment. Amity is also nice, but it doesn't quite have Arrietty's whimsical spelling.)

To those folks in this comment section who appear to be concerned with how this name is pronounced... Arrietty sounds okay if you pronounce it AH-ree-ETT-y, with a British accent.

Consider this... the name Harry does NOT sound too much like ''hairy'' if you pronounce it properly. On the other hand, while the name Ingrid does sounds a bit like ''ingrate'', it's still a beautiful name regardless. Even the lovely classic name Charlotte has the word ''harlot'' hidden in the middle.

My conclusion: if Harry, Ingrid, and Charlotte are good names (which they are!) then Arrietty has the potential to be a fine name as well, regardless of how some people might mispronounce it. Besides, the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the name Arrietty is the young lady from ''The Borrowers'', not anxiety or the yeti or anything else.

It's sooo cute but I'm worried it would only work on a little girl or an old lady... might be weird on a regular woman.

My daughters name, although we use the spelling Arietty as two R's seemed a bit fussy

I think you might be pronouncing it wrong then. It's "air-ee-ett-ee."

When I say it out loud, all I hear is "Hairy Yeti". Pretty hard to unhear.
