It's a distinguished name, but I cannot imagine a baby or boy named Abelard. Only an elderly man in wheelchair pops in my mind.

Agreed! There's also Abe, which I love so dearly. I don't think it's the most teasable name out there, but it starts with "abby" as its first syllable. That could mean trouble. I still agree that this name is very distinguished. It's very soft for a German name, and meaning is beautiful. I agree with Nameberry's comment. Unusual and usable. It would take a lot to make this name work.
