Goldwyn is a distinguished masculine name with Anglo-Saxon origins, combining elements meaning 'gold' and 'friend.' The name gained recognition primarily through Samuel Goldwyn, the famous Polish-American film producer who co-founded Goldwyn Pictures and contributed to the formation of MGM Studios. As a first name, Goldwyn remains quite rare, giving it an air of exclusivity and sophistication. It suggests qualities of value, friendship, and creative achievement. The name carries a certain Hollywood glamour while maintaining a classic, dignified sound. For parents seeking a name with both historical roots and a touch of artistic prestige, Goldwyn represents an uncommon yet meaningful choice.

Not a traditional biblical choice, but the Philistine giant isn't a bad character as such, just a champion fighter who lost to the underdog. He has given his name to everything from insect species to roller coasters. In a time when we're seeing more biblical names with chequered associations — Leviathan and Cain spring to mind — Goliath may appeal to some.

Goliath

A rare, unisex Biblical name, with a similar feel to choices like Omar, Haziel, Gideon, and Ofir, but also to Montgomery and Grover. In the Bible, Gomer was both a son of Japheth (and therefore grandson of Noah), and the wife of the prophet Hosea.
Once associated mainly with the good natured but very naïve Gomer Pyle, a character from The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer is now linked to the medical abbreviation "Get Out of My Emergency Room", referring to a patient who doesn't appear to be in need of medical care.
More generally and more derogatively, it might also be used to describe a difficult patient who is often readmitted, or a foolish and incompetent work colleague. And then, there's gomerization, an informal farming term for a type of animal neutering. Not the associations you'd want for a baby, for multiple reasons.

Gordo is a masculine name derived from the Spanish word meaning 'fat' or 'chubby,' often used as a nickname for someone with a stocky build. In Spanish-speaking cultures, it's commonly used as an affectionate nickname rather than a formal given name. The term gained some recognition in American popular culture through the 1950s TV show 'Gordo,' featuring a character of that name, and through 'Gordon' nicknames. As a proper name, Gordo has a friendly, approachable quality with its soft consonants and clear ending vowel. While uncommon as a formal given name in English-speaking countries, it might appeal to parents seeking a name with Hispanic cultural connections or a distinctive sound. The name carries connotations of heartiness, warmth, and a jovial personality.

Italian form of Gratian, the name of a Roman emperor who campaigned across the Rhine and favored Christianity over paganism. Graziano isn't common either in the English-speaking world or its native Italy, although the boxer Rocky Graziano adopted it from his grandfather's surname. In the current vogue for names ending in -o and Italian names, it may be worth a second look.

Graziano

A name with a lot of panache, with ties to the great Spanish Mannerist painter El Greco--though his real name was DOMENICOS.

If you find Grover too fusty and furry, this is a much cooler-sounding alternative.

Gru is an unusual masculine name that gained recognition primarily through the main character in the animated film series 'Despicable Me.' Before this cultural reference, the name had very limited usage globally. It may have origins as a shortened form of Eastern European surnames or as a nickname in several cultures. The name is extremely rare as a given name but has seen occasional use since the film's popularity beginning in 2010. Gru has a distinctive brevity that makes it memorable, with just one syllable and three letters. While some parents might choose it for its association with the reformed villain character known for his intelligence and eventual kindness, its rarity suggests most families still consider it too closely tied to the fictional character for mainstream use.

As an English word name, Gruff is rough round the outside with playful air, similar to Rowdy or Wilder, while as a Welsh nickname, it comes from the more stately Gruffudd meaning "strong lord". It would be said to rhyme with rough or bluff in the first instance and as GRIF in Welsh.
