Maud, lacy and mauve-tinted, was wildly popular a hundred years ago but has been rarely heard in the past fifty. Some stylish parents are starting to choose Maud again, especially as a middle. Maude is another spelling, associated with actress Maude Apatow.

As a British royal name, Maud was the daughter of the youngest daughter of King Edward VII and granddaughter of Queen Victoria, who went on to become Queen of Norway. As a lively young girl, she was given the boyish nickname of Harry.

Said with a strong O sound in the UK and a softer one in the US, it ultimately comes from the French word for the floral Mallow, itself from the Latin Malva. Mauve debuted in the US stats in 2024 when it was given to 6 girls.

Mauve

A striking form of international favourite Maria, the meaning of which is uncertain. Theories include "drop of the sea" (from Hebrew roots mar "drop" and yam "sea"); "bitter" (from Hebrew marah "bitterness"); and "beloved" (from the Egyptian root mr).

Maxime is a French feminine name, though it can also be used for males in some cultures. Derived from the Latin name Maximus, meaning "greatest" or "largest," it carries connotations of excellence and achievement. In France, Maxime has maintained steady popularity as a given name for both genders but is more commonly used for boys. The feminine usage tends to emphasize the elegant, sophisticated quality of French naming traditions. Outside of French-speaking regions, Maxime is less common but appreciated for its international flair and subtle strength. The name offers the friendly nickname Max while maintaining a more formal, distinctive full name. Its classic roots and modern appeal have helped Maxime remain relevant across generations without becoming overused.

Margolette

Marge used to be as common as Maggie or Megan, ranking on its own in the girls' Top 1000 from 1900 until right after World War II, when so many Old School names fell off the list in favor of a new generation cuter, perkier choices.

Today, Grandma may be shocked to learn that Marge is extinct, given to zero baby girls in the US. And we doubt many little Margarets or Margos are called Marge either.

Marge

Maybellene is the true one-of-a-kind baby name that Taylor and Natalie Hanson chose for their daughter in 2020. It's a variation of Maybelline, which is itself an elaboration of the name Mabel. The Maybellene spelling makes it one step removed from the cosmetics brand and also connects it to the Chuck Berry song.

Maybellene

Russian form of Martha, used in several novels by Feodor Dostoyevsky. Marfa is perhaps best known as the name of artistic city Marfa, Texas. One of the origins of the surname Maisel was matronymic, from the Yiddish first name Mayzl, of which the meaning is uncertain. Some sources connect it to the Yiddish word for "mouse," while others claim it is related to Moshe/Moses.

Mardi is a foreign word name that sounds like a homegrown nickname. For what? We're not sure, but it's kinda cute, and preferable to Tuesday.

Mardi

A mythological name, borne by a princess and sorceress who helped Jason gain the Golden Fleece. In some versions of the myth, she and Jason marry, but he later abandons her to remarry. In revenge, Medea kills her own sons with Jason and his new bride.

Similar in sound to Amadea, Maddy, and Mireya, Medea remains a rare choice, likely due to the myth that surrounds it. It is used more notably in Georgia, however, where her name is associated with the term "medicine" and has been borne by actress Medea Japaridze and opera singer Medea Amiranashvili.

It may very occasionally be used as an alternative transcription of the Arabic Madiha ("to praise").

Medea

In Greek myth, Medusa was one of the three monstrous Gorgons, with live venomous snakes in place of hair and the ability to turn people to stone with just a glance. In later myths, Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden, who was transformed into a monster by the jealous Athena.

Using a mirror to avoid looking directly at her, Medusa was slain by Perseus and her head turned into a shield. According to some legends, she bore Pegasus, the winged horse, and the giant Chrysaor, as she died.

Despite its heavy mythological baggage, Medusa broke into the US charts for girls in 2022.
