Saran
Saran Origin and Meaning
A multicultural choice, used across India, Korea, Thailand, West Africa, and Mongolia, Saran is a solid sounding name with a variety of good meanings.
As an Indian name, Saran is used primarily among the Sikh population and has the comforting meaning of "sanctuary". From its West African roots, it has its origins in the Jula language, spoken in Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, and Mali. In this case, it means "joy, happiness".
When used among Korean speakers, it is possibly related to the word sarang, meaning "love, affection", though if spelled with different characters, it can also mean "silk + orchid". From its Mongolian roots, Saran is a celestial choice, associated with the moon, while from its Thai origins, it means "supporting" and is more commonly used on boys.
Given to 18 girls in the US in a recent year, it might be worth bearing in mind the association with the polyethylene food wrap, produced by S.C. Johnson, known as saran wrap. It doesn't make it a no go however, especially if you live outside the US.
