About Syrus

Syrus can be a spelling variation of the Greek Syros, a myhtological figure and the founder of Assyria. Pronounced SEER-us, it was borne by two early saints and means "a Syrian" or "from Syria".

The name was given to nearly 100 babies in the US in a recent year, though it is unlikely parents had the Greek origins in mind when you chose it. Instead, it may be considered an anglicized variation of the Persian Cyrus, which came to public attention via a reality-TV star on MTV's "Real World."

Modern usage may be further inspired by the popularity of Silas and Sylas.

Pronounced SEER-us.

As of October 2026, Syrus ranked #1820 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #1476 in 2023.
