About Perun

God of the sky, thunder, lightning, rain and war, Perun is the highest-ranking deity in Slavic mythology. Also associated with eagles, mountains, fire, the law, and oak trees, the name may come from the Proto-Slavic element per- meaning "to slay, to strike".

Alternatively, the name has been interpreted to mean "oak" from a Baltic root and "thunder" in Old Slavic. Sometimes spelled as Peryn, as in the case of the Peryn Peninsular in Russia (the site of a shrine to Perun), it feels like an accessible mythological choice.

Perun has been used as the name of a Marvel character, also known as Valeri Sovloyev, who appears in various comic books, though in the real world, it has seen only very limited, given to a handful of people in Russia and Bulgaria.

The name should not be confused with the Cornish saint's name, Perran, or the French variation of Pierre and Peter, Perrin, though they may feel more usable if mythological names aren't for you.

Pronounced PER-oon.
