About Darrin
Darrin as a feminine name represents an interesting crossover from its more traditional use as a masculine name. Originally, Darrin is a variant of Darren, which derives from the Irish surname Ó Dairrín, meaning 'descendant of Darragh.' While predominantly used for boys since the mid-20th century, some parents have chosen it for girls, reflecting the modern trend of gender-neutral naming. As a feminine choice, Darrin offers a strong, distinctive alternative to popular 'Dar-' names like Daria or Darla. This usage remains quite rare, making it a truly unique option. The name carries connotations of strength and individuality, and its unexpected application for girls can make a bold statement about challenging traditional gender norms in naming practices.

Darrin is a masculine name that originated as a variant of Darren, which itself derived from the Irish surname Ó Darragh, meaning "descendant of Daire" (from an Irish personal name meaning "oak tree" or "fertile"). This name gained significant popularity in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s, partly influenced by the character Darrin Stephens from the popular television show "Bewitched" (1964-1972). Darrin conveys a friendly, approachable quality with its soft consonants and familiar sound pattern. The name peaked in popularity during the mid-1960s but has gradually declined since then, now maintaining a classic yet not overly common status. Darrin strikes a balance between being recognizable and distinctive.
Pronounced DAR-in.
As of October 2026, Darrin ranked #13953 in US births in 1995 SSA, peaked at #2959 in 1965.
