About Candace
Candace, an ancient title of a dynasty of Ethiopian queens mentioned in the New Testament, is associated both with actress Candice Bergen and Sex and the City writer Candace Bushnell.
Both spellings were most popular in the 1980s, but the sticky sweetness of nickname Candy undercuts the popularity of the name today. About 50 baby girls were named Candace last year, and half that many given the Candice spelling.
William Faulkner used the name Candace, shortened to Caddy, as a main character in his 1929 novel The Sound and the Fury.
Candace is also given to boys.
Pronounced KAN-dis.
As of October 2026, Candace ranked #8374 in US births in 1991 SSA, peaked at #2838 in 1984.
