Top Baby Names 2021

A handsome Irish name for boys, very popular in that country, but in the US this traditional spelling might cause pronunciation problems. Still, whether Cian or Kian, it's simple and straightforward enough for the initiated. Cian is rising in the British popularity charts.
This was the name of several legendary figures, including Cian, son of the god of medicine. His own son was Lugh, the sun god and father of the Ulster warrior Cuchulain and Cian is also the name of the son-in-law of the high king Brian Boru. So very well connected.

In the past, Orson has felt like a one-person moniker, tied to film director Orson Welles, who dropped his given name of George in favor of his more distinctive middle. While the Citizen Kane creator seemed to own the name during his lifetime, it's now an interesting possibility for any parent seeking an unusual yet solid name. It's started to appear to the celeb set too -- both Paz Vega and Lauren Ambrose have little Orsons.

Unusual but grounded, Orson sounds enough like the word "awesome" that it immediately feels really cool. It is derived from an old Norman nickname, meaning "bear cub", giving it the animal/nature connection of the popular Arthur, Oscar, and Leo, plus the possibility of well-loved nicknames Teddy and Bear.

While it hasn't appeared in the US Top 1000 since the beginning of the 20th century, over the last decade use of Orson has more than tripled. Given to around 130 babies in 2023 - the highest number of Orsons born in a single year so far - it could well continue to rise up the charts.

Other noteworthy namesakes include the comic actor Orson Bean and theDesperate Housewives character Orson Hodge.
Orson also appears in a 15th century story about two brothers named Valentine and Orson, in which the latter was carried off by a bear and raised as one of its cubs. And, for a literary connection, in Charlotte Bronte's novel Villette, the narrator Lucy Snowe gets called the French variation of the name Ourson as one of the many nicknames bestowed on her by Ginevra Fanshawe.

In the UK, Orson is in the Top 500 and it is also a Namberry favorite.

Avalon, an island paradise of Celtic myth and Arthurian legend--it was where King Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds-- and also the colorful capital of the California island of Catalina-- makes a heavenly first name. Actress Rena Sofer and British musician Julian Cope used it for their daughters.
Avalon manages to blend the appeal of Ava and Evelyn, while sounding more interesting and unique.

Delia is a somewhat neglected southern charmer that stands on its own but also might be short for Adelia or Cordelia.
Delia's name is based on that of the Greek island of Delos, which in Greek myth was the home of Apollo and Artemis and was an epithet of the moon goddess Artemis, and later taken up by the seventeenth century pastoral poets.
In Britain it has been associated with the cookbook writer and broadcaster Delia Smith; in the U.S. with novelist/screenwriter Delia Ephron, who often collaborated with her sister Nora. There have been characters named Delia on Everwood and Ghost Whisperer.

Chester is a comfortable, little-used teddy-bear of a name that suddenly sounds both quirky and cuddly.
Chester was a Top 100 name in the US from the 1880s to 1929, gradually fading till it finally dropped off the list completely in 1995. But it's popular now in England and Wales, where it ranks in the Top 100

Chester has been seen on old TV shows like Gunsmoke and The Life of Riley, then reappeared later on The Nanny and The Wire. Chester Alan Arthur made it presidential, it was a World War II hero via Admiral Chester Nimitz, the comic world associates it with Chester Gould, creator of Dick Tracy, and it has modern musical ties to Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have a son named Chester.
Nickname Chet has, like Hank, a friendly retro vibe.

Fia may be most notable at this moment as the Anglicized version of the Irish Fiadh, one of the fastest-rising names in the Republic of Ireland. The meaning of Fia or Fiadh is sometimes given as "deer" but that's in the sense of a wild deer, as the name relates to the ancient word for wild.
In Portuguese, Fia means weaver, and Fia may also be a short form of the Italian or Spanish Sofia or Fiammetta or any other fia-related name.

Whatever its origin and meaning, Fia is a light and pleasant alternative to the mega-popular Mia, though we predict it will rise up the charts in the future.

Adah is a biblical name twice over—one was the mother of Jabal and Jubal, the other was a wife of Esau. The latter Adah and Esau’s descendants settled in Edom and became the Edomites. Adah is unrelated to the visually similar name Ada, which is Germanic in origin.

Pronounced AH-dah, this unusual biblical name—the first female name in Genesis after Eve and given to a number of women in the Old Testament—is a softer Ada equivalent.

Calix is once-obscure name that is starting to see some use in the US, where 62 baby boys were named Calix in 2024. An indirect influence is the actress Calista Flockhart, who introduced Americans to the female version of this attractive Greek name to prominence.

Calix derives from the Latin word for chalice, calyx, which in turn came from the Ancient Greek word kálux, meaning "husk" or "pod." It is also considered a diminutive of Calixtus, a variation of the Late Roman name Callistus meaning "most beautiful." Calyx can also be spelled Calyx, as in the funnel or chalice-shaped part of a flower.

Alfie is a Top 20 name throughout the British Isles, where retro nickname names are mega-popular, but it hasn't really been picked up in the US yet, given to around 70 boys in a recent year. Nevertheless, both Alfie and rising star Archie are spunky nickname possibilities with a bit of an English accent.
Thanks to some louche fictional characters, Alfie has long had a lovable rogue image. First there was the Michael Caine character in the 1966 eponymous film, followed by a 2004 remake starring Jude Law. In Britain, the name was given a big boost by the Alfie Moon character in the long-running soap, EastEnders.

In the Top 300 girl names in England and Wales and on Nameberry, Primrose remains rare in the US, but is made more accessible by a raft of sweet nickname options, including Rosie and Posy.

The flower name Primrose derives from Latin prima rosa, meaning "first rose", since primrose flowers are among the first to appear in early spring, heralding the coming of better weather. Primrose also has an alternative history as a Scottish surname deriving from the place name Penrhos, from the Welsh words pren "tree" and rhos "moor." The spelling was later altered due to association with the flower.

In the H. E. Bates book and 90's British TV series, The Darling Buds of May, there is a character named Primrose Violet Anemone Iris Magnolia Narcissa Larkin, who has twin sisters named Zinnia and Petunia.

In Greek mythology, Nyx was a powerful goddess and the embodiment of the night, giving this name a dark yet mystical feel. She is often depicted as one of the first deities, an offspring of Chaos who appears in black robes and whom even Zeus fears to anger.

Similar in sound to Nicks (or Nicky) and to Onyx, Phoenix, Lennyx, Pixie, and Trixie, some may associate it too strongly with the word nix (meaning "nothing", "refuse" or "put an end to"), or to the make-up brand, Nyx. It was nevertheless chosen for nearly 70 girls (and 30 boys) in the US in a recent year.

A starry-eyed, intergalactic name, far rarer than Stella or Esther. It's attached both to a comic book character and to Princess Astra on "Doctor Who".

Astra

Acacius is a Latinized form of the Ancient Greek Akakios and can be interpreted to relate to the same root as the name Acacia, for the thorn bush, or Akakios which means "not evil." With the modern taste for ancient names that end in "us," this obscure but attractive choice may have a chance of new life. Acacius is the name of three early saints.

Cosima, the kind of elegant and unusual name the British upper classes love to use for their daughters, is given to a handful of baby girls in the US after being chosen by two high-profile celebs in the same month; cool couple Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars as well as supermodel Claudia Schiffer. It was used earlier by celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, while the male form, Cosimo, was given to the son of Marissa Ribisi and Beck.

The most famous Cosima in history had strong musical ties — Cosima Wagner was the daughter of composer Franz Liszt and the wife of composer Richard Wagner. Cosima is well used in Germany, Italy and Greece, but in the US, it was given to only ten baby girls in 2021, the same number who got the name in 2010.

A note on pronunciation: in Germany, Italy, and Spain, they say KO-zee-ma, like cozy ma. In the UK, they rhyme the first syllable with boss. In the US, you can do whatever you want.

Cosima

This unusual Greek flower and color name has gained considerable recent attention via actress Ione Skye, who is the daughter of sixties folksinger Donovan.
Ione was one of the fifty sea nymphs — Nereids — in ancient Greek mythology.
Parents attracted to newer I-names like Isla might want to consider the distinctive Ione. The English pronunciation usually starts with the long I, while in the Latin languages such as Italian it starts with the long E sound.

Ione

Edison's middle name is a fabulous option for parents looking for something with history and a soft sound. This could be the name you're looking for if you like Tesla's scientific pedigree but think that it has become too corporate with the advent of Elon Musk's company.
