Invented Girl Names

Aubriella is a hybrid name that marries two trendy favorites, Aubrey and Ella, into one. It ranked in the US Top 1000 between 2014 and 2022, and while it never rose above the Top 800, it likely feels more popular than it actually is, thanks to its well used components and similarities to the likes of Gabriella and Annabella.

A unisex name with an appealing and nature inspired meaning, Kamari is currently more popular for boys in the US, though it is climbing the charts for girls too, after in entered the Top 1000 in 2019. Derived from the Arabic Qamar meaning "moon", it also appears as Kamaria is Swahili and Comorian.

Given to just shy of 350 girls in a recent year, for every girl called Kamari, there are two boys.

A compound name made up of Aubrey and Brielle, this modern invention blends fresh, stylish sounds, with a nod to more traditional elegance. It entered the US Top 1000 in 2012 and remained there for a decade, and though it has fallen from the top of the charts, it was still given to around 230 girls in a recent year.

The unisex Aubrey has been more popular for girls since the 70s, and Aubrielle makes it more definitively feminine, reminiscent of Gabrielle, Annabelle, or Isabelle. Brielle meanwhile is used as a diminutive of Gabrielle - or as a nod to the towns in New Jersey and the Netherlands, whose name means "hunting grounds". This name could also be seen as a combination of Aubrey and the suffix -elle used to denote it is a feminine name. This could switch the meaning to "elf queen".

A notable Aubrielle is the gymnast, model, and social media star, Aubrielle Rich, whose account is run by her mother.

Jaycee is a modern invented name, likely inspired by the similar sounding Casey and Macy. While these names peaked in the 1990s and 2000s, their energetic and contemporary vibe has kept them relevant today, and a recent year saw more than 300 girls given the name Jaycee in the US.

As Jaycee is an invention based on the sounds of established names, it doesn't have a specific meaning of its own. You might say, however, that it means "jaybird" from the "jay" element, or that it's a compound name, blending James, Jay, or Jane with Casey or Macey, offering meanings such as "vigilant supplanter", "God is gracious and vigilant", "jaybird on the hill" or similar.

Afro-Asian model, designer, and entrepreneur Kimora Lee Simmons brought this name into the public eye and it enjoyed more than a decade in the Top 1000 during the 2000s and early 2010s. It peaked in 2008 when it reached the Top 300, but it has since been in decline, becoming an on-off visitor to the US charts.

The exact meaning of Kimora is unknown, though one possibility is that it's a nod the Japanese surname, Kimura, meaning "woods + village". Back in the US Top 1000 for 2023, Kimora could also feel like an updated form of Kim or Maura, and a spin on more popular Kora.

Prior to 2013, this name was unheard of. That was the year that Larry Hernandez, singer and star of reality show Larrymania, gave the name to his daughter. It has now entered the US Top 1000, following in the footsteps of Daleyza, the invented name Hernandez bestows upon his older daughter.

Part Ava, part Lynn, and part cousin of the stylish Evelyn and Adeline, Avalynn is a recent 2014 entrant to the US Top 1000. But sometimes when a name is trying hard to have everything, it doesn't really impress. Avalyn is one spelling variation.

A combination name and an English surname, Brynley has trendy sounds, nature-related meanings, and has a double dose of the cool letter Y. Despite this, it is less popular than its Top 1000 counterparts, Brinley, Brynlee, and Brynleigh, and given to around 170 girls each year. Actress Brynley Stent is a notable bearer, as are fitness influencer Brynley Joyner and Instagram star and dancer, Brynley Arnold.

Wrenley entered the charts back in 2013, inspired by rising word name Wren and names such as Hadley, Everly and Paisley. Now, it's a Top 150 choice, with spelling variations Wrenleigh and Wrenlee also in the Top 1000. This trimmed down spelling has also been on the rise, given to 206 girls in 2024, compared to 155 the year prior.

Eliette is a delicate feminine name of French origin, functioning as a diminutive form of names like Elie (the French version of Elijah) or Elizabeth. The name carries the meaning 'the Lord is my God' through its connection to these Hebrew-origin names. With its distinctly French flair, Eliette combines elegance with a gentle, sophisticated sound. Though relatively uncommon in English-speaking countries, it has maintained modest usage in France and French-speaking regions. The name offers a refined alternative to more common El- names, appealing to parents seeking something melodic with European charm. Eliette's soft syllables and graceful ending create a name that sounds both classic and somewhat unexpected, conveying femininity with subtle strength.

A combination of vintage Mae with popular suffix -lynn, Maelyn feels reminiscent of glamorous Marilyn and contemporary Raelynn.

In use since at least the 80s, Maelyn practically doubled in popularity 2019 after singer Maelyn Jarmon won that year's season of The Voice. Given to around 180 babies in 2023, when you combine this with the 215 girls with the alternative -lynn spelling the same year, that makes for nearly 400 Maelyns.

Raylynn is a contemporary feminine name that combines the popular 'Ray' prefix with the fashionable 'lynn' suffix. 'Ray' typically derives from Raymond, meaning 'wise protector,' or may reference 'ray of light,' suggesting brightness and hope. The 'lynn' element comes from the Welsh word for 'lake' or 'waterfall.' This compound name emerged primarily in the United States in the latter half of the 20th century as part of the trend toward created names with melodious sounds. Raylynn gained modest popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, particularly in southern states. The name has a modern, feminine quality while maintaining a connection to nature imagery through its component parts.

Hollyn combines the Christmas- and nature-inspired feel of Holly, with the preppy, unisex style of Collins, all stung together with the globetrotter flair of Holland and the trendy -lyn ending of Gracelyn, Raelyn, and co. The name first appeared in the US stats back in the 70s,but remained obscure until the 2010s when it began trending upwards.

Possibly created as an elaboration or a smoosh form of Holly, Hollyn could combine the word name with the suffix -lyn, giving it the possible meanings of "holly by the lake" or "beautiful holly". Alternatively, it might be a spin on the recently popular place name Holland, or on the surname of the same spelling. Following the pattern of Scotlyn and Emersyn, the -lyn ending gives it a slightly more name-like feel.

Given to around 160 girls in the US, Hollyn has more than doubled in use over the last decade, with parents possibly taking inspiration from singer Holly Wilson, who uses Hollyn as a stage name.

With the sprightly "Ren" and "Wren" currently in fashion, and "ley" a productive suffix to create new names, this combination was inevitable, and is chirpy and appealing. Renley has been on the US charts for girls since 2012, and for boys since 2013. It probably got a boost from the Game of Thrones character Renly Baratheon, albeit with a slightly different spelling.

You might consider this an alternative spelling of Wrenley meaning "Wren clearing" or it could be borrowed from an English surname meaning "edge of the meadow".

205 girls were called Renley in a recent year, though Wrenley was picked for nearly 2000.

Amber begot Ember expanded into Emberly, Emberlyn, and Emberlynn -- and undoubtedly many more variations. Emberlyn has a rhythmic Kimberly vibe too, so it might be an honor name for a grandma Amber, Kim, or Lynn.

It is popularly claimed that the name Wendy was invented by Sir James Barrie in 1904 for the big sister character in his play Peter Pan, which was followed by the classic novel in 1911. Barrie supposedly took it from the nickname "fwendy-wendy", that he was called by a young girl acquaintance.

Although the character of Wendy Darling undoubtedly popularized the name across the English-speaking world – peaking in the Top 10 in several countries in the 1950s and 60s – it did actually appear rarely before that. It was likely derived from the Welsh name Gwendolen and its variants.

Wendy's heyday was once upon a time, but it's starting to undergo a style revolution. With other bouncy and peppy retro nicknames, like Sadie and Edie, rising, Wendy could be part of the next wave.
