Invented Girl Names

An explosive name brought to public attention by Olympic skateboarder Bombette Martin. Her name was inspired by her dad's boxing nickname, Bomber.

Bombette

A newly hatched cousin of Bree and Brea, with a touch of Bailey and Brynn there too, Brae feels like a name that could catch on. However, a 'bray' is also the sound a donkey makes.

Brae

Adding that B to Randall transforms a pretty boyish surname choice into a 21st century spin on Brandy.

Brandall

Braxley itself may not be all that common — it was only given to 5 girls and 13 boys in 2021 — but as a combination of two on-trend syllables, you may run into a lot of children with similar names.

Braxley

One in the currently modish aden family of boys' names beginning to be used for girls as well as boys. The name Brayden was given to 15 baby girls in the US last year....and over 5000 baby boys, so it can hardly be considered gender neutral, but rather a boys' name occasionally used for girls.

Brayden

Up-and-coming combo of trendy syllables that could work as a modern way to honor a Brenda or Brendan.

Brenlynn

Americans love an X in their baby names, so we're not surprised that 15 sets of parents came up with Brennex for their sons and daughters in 2018. It has not been on the charts as a girl name since then, though it is still used for baby boys.

Brennex

An amalgam of Brianna and Sienna that doesn't quite work.

We're suddenly hearing of babies of both genders with this invented name that's a mashup of Tyler and Riley (or Rylee et al). Ryler might also be a rare surname or occupational name, meaning "worker in a rye field" or some such, though ryler is not a genuine occupational word the way cooper and sawyer are.

Ryler

Riler is another spelling on the trendy invented name Ryler, given in the US last year to 33 baby boys and six girls. A mashup of the trendy surname-names Tyler and Riley, Riler and Ryler bridge the gender gap between the male-leaning Tyler and female-heavy Riley.

Riler is one of the invented names that as a "same but different" choice, ala Rylan, represents an update on names that may have gotten too popular.

Brilie combines elements of the megapopular Briana and Riley to form a pleasant merger. Some would call Brilie a Smoosh Name.

Trapped somewhere in the nether region between Haddie and Catie, with the added confusion of sounding like someone who works on a golf course. Caddie Woodlawn was a TV heroine of the Old West in the 1980s. Caddie had its moment, but we don't see it becoming one of the more popular girl names starting with C.

In Colonial times, Caddie was a nickname for Caroline.

Caïssa was invented as a goddess of chess by Italian poet Marco Girolamo Vida in 1527. The name is known in the chess community, but not much outside of that.

Capitola owes its position on the US Top 1000 to the 1859 novel The Hidden Hand, also known as Capitola the Madcap. It was written by E. D. E. N. Southworth — the initials stand for Eliza Dorothy Emma Nevitte — and serialized first in the 1860s, then in 1883, and was published as a book in 1888.

Southworth invented the name for her character Capitola Black (also known as Capitola Le Noir), an orphaned tomboy who falls into adventures everywhere from New York City to Mexico. A sequel to The Hidden Hand called Capitola's Peril was released in 1876.

You could either see this as a smoosh of Cara + Lena (or any name ending in -lena), or a variation on Carolina. Either way, it's a pretty, melodious name that first appeared on the US charts in 2008, and has been used sparingly ever since.

Caralena

Cardi B is the stage name of the rapper born Belcalis Almanzar. The name Cardi originated as a short form of Bacardi, a nickname the musician got because her sister is named Hennessy, after the cognac. The B, she says, stands for a range of things, depending on the day, including Belcalis and Bacardi. Cardi is one invented name that's found instant fame and could go much further. For now, it's definitely one of the most talked-about girl names starting with C.

In addition to Abrielle and Wrenley, other

We tend to think of invented girl names as a modern phenomenon, but plenty of classic and well-established names are the result of someone's ingenuity. Shakespeare invented the name Jessica, for example. Other
