Thompson is my surname. Unlike other surnames-turned-names, which are short and sweet (e.g. Jackson, Harrison, as mentioned above), I think it would be better as a surname. Naming a child, for example, "Thompson Smith", sounds like a hyphenated surname when said out loud.
