Gender: Female Pronunciation: NI-ah-BEE or nee-O-bee Origin of Niobe: Greek mythology name

Niobe Origin and Meaning

The name Niobe is a girl's name of Greek origin.

The mythological queen whose perpetual weeping for her slain children turned her into a stone has always cast a pall over this name. Still, when other names with less-than-savory associations -- Delilah, Ophelia, Persephone -- are becoming popular, parents might want to consider this one of the more unusual mythology names for girls.

I have never heard of this myth before, but I don't think that vanity and hubris are THAT bad, so I wouldn't let this keep me from naming my child Niobe if I wanted to.

I would like this name if it didn't sound like someone saying Naomi with a terrible cold.

I would never name my kid this, but it could be nice as a fictional character name.

Her children were killed by Apollo and Artemis because of her vanity and hubris, so yeah, not the best namesake

I'm not big on name meanings, but I do pay attention to literary allusions and would not name my girls Niobe, Ophelia, Medea, or the like.
