Will Maynard ever return to the spotlight again? I can only hope so, but the emphasized “nard” suffix might dissuade parents. To those who discredit Maynard’s appeal, I ask why Bernard is okay, but not Maynard? Maynard conjures up jazz icon (Walter) Maynard Ferguson and Maynard James Keenan of Tool, who personally chose Maynard to be his sobriquet. Maynard G. Krebs was the laid back, happy-go-lucky hipster beatnik sidekick of 50s sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (“Good stuff, Maynard!”). One unfortunate connection is to the sadistic pawn shop owner in Pulp Fiction, whose name is only mentioned once. Bottom line, Maynard makes for a unique and quirky choice with several positive associations. Just don’t pronounce it as “May-Nerd”. It’s “May-Nard”.
