Gender: Female Meaning of Mairi: "bitter" Origin of Mairi: Scottish variation of Mary

Mairi Origin and Meaning

The name Mairi is a girl's name of Scottish origin meaning "bitter".

Why does Mairi, pronounced MAW-re, seem so much cooler than Mary? This Irish form of Mary was not used before the seventeenth century, as it was considered too sacred. Some of its Anglicized forms include Moira, Maura and Maurya.

Oh, thanks! I wonder why the info page says it's pronounced MAW-re. Pretty either way. :)

It's MA-ree.

I'm afraid people in the US would think it's a cre8tive spelling of Mary. But it is absolutely beautiful! I'm a little confused on the pronunciation, though.

I'm really surprised that Mhairi isn't listed as a name if Mairi is - especially since I've met three Mhairi's in Scotland, but no Mairi's. Mhairi is usually pronounced MA-ree, although in traditional Scottish Gaelic it's VA-ree (as is the case for two of the three I know). I prefer the latter personally. It's a really familiar name here.

I think this name is pretty and interesting, but I prefer Mary.

I love this name and pronunciation, but I'm pretty sure everyone would call her Mary. Does anyone have ideas for alternative spellings with the pronunciation of Maw-ree that would not be mistaken for Mary?
