Lux, one of the light-filled names that include Lucy and Lucian, broke onto the scene as a girls' name but now it's decidedly gender neutral. In fact, at the last count there were slightly more boys named Lux than girls: 140 to 120. But that's pretty close, making this a truly nonbinary name.

An up-and-coming nickname-style name, hugely popular in Germany and on the rise in the UK, Leni is stylish but sweet. Chosen for her daughter by high-profile German supermodel Heidi Klum back in 2004, Leni with its concise spelling and European feel is also on the rise in the US, alongside Lennie, Lenny, Lennox, and Lennon.

Leni could be a diminutive form of a number of names, including Elena, Helen/e, Lenora, and Magdalena, and its similarity to trending Lainey may give it fresh appeal.

Less common than other virtue names, Liberty is nonetheless a name with a long American heritage. Liberty is seeing a level of popularity not seen since the end of the First World War, but its heyday was probably the mid-19th Century when it became popular in the aftermath of the US Civil War, particularly among African-American freedmen. Liberty was also popular following the American War of Independence and even among some Puritan colonies. Some quirky parents may have considered using this name in the wake of the successful film Juno – Juno’s younger sister is called Liberty-Bell.

This spelling variation of the name only recently entered the Top 1000 in 2008. The popular Layla is currently very popular in the United States, while the more traditional Leila is also widely used. The added h at the end of this version could be considered superfluous, possibly leading to confusion down the road.

Some might think a girl named Liz on her birth certificate would feel deprived of her full identity, but in a time when mini names like Liv, Kit, Tru, Kai, Lou, and Bea are in style, Liz feels substantial enough that its bearer won't feel bereft.

A solid, succinct nickname, it was famously borne by actress Elizabeth Taylor, while plenty of others have used it professionally, even if they were born Elizabeth. A few noteworthy Liz's include actress and disability rights activist Liz Carr, politician Liz Truss, presenter Liz Bonnin, and actress Liz Fraser.

Liz ranks as a stand-alone choice in the Netherlands, pronounced LEEZ.

About 100 baby boys were named Lucio in the US last year, a number we expect to increase with the growing popularity of all names in the Lu family. It's a family united by sound, with three main branches.

Lucio belongs with the light-meaning names such as Lucius, Lucy, Lucia, and Lux. Then there is the Luke, Lucas, and Luca names that mean "man from Lucanus." Both these branches are rooted in the Latin.

Louis, Louise, Luis, and Louisa have French and German roots and mean "renowned warrior".

Pronunciation of Lucio differs according to country. Spanish and Portuguese speakers pronounce the c like an s and may emphasize the first or the second syllable, depending on country. So the options are LOO-see-oh or loo-SEE-oh.

Italians pronounce the c like the English ch and pronounce the name with only two syllables: LOO-cho.

In the US, London is popular for both sexes, though as the name has risen for girls, it's levelled off for boys. Currently given to around 200 boys each year, it is nearly five times more popular for girls, however, it been on decline across the board since its peak in 2013. Conjuring up images of Big Ben, red phone boxes, and the London Eye for some, but perhaps the rush hour commute and grey skies for others, London is far less popular in the UK and other English-speaking countries.

the exact etymology of London is unknown, however theories suggest it was named for King Lud who once controlled the city and therefore means "Lud's Fortress", Lud possibly coming from Llud meaning "mist, haze" or "to acquire". A more recent suggestion is that it comes from a proto-Indo-European root, lendh meaning "sink", which was adapted into the Celtic noun londos meaning "subduing". Combined with a Celtic suffix to make it singular, the old name Londinjon could then mean "place that floods", reflecting the tidal element of the River Thames. Several other linguists and historians have suggested a variety of origins, all which reference the river in some way.

A nickname of yesteryear that like alongside Reggie, Alby, Archie, and Bertie, is back in consideration. Already in the UK Top 200, a high-ranking choice in Switzerland and a familiar option in The Netherlands and France, this friendly feeling short from of Leonard might appeal to those who like Freddie and Teddy.

In the US, Lenny hasn't quite caught on, but it is on the rise, given to 133 boys and 50 girls in a recent year. It may have been helped along by the rise of Lennox and Lennon, and by the fact many classrooms have now dropped Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men from the curriculum.

Leander was once an almost unknown name, however, with the popularity of Leo and the rise of Leandro, it now feels like a perfectly accessible alternative to Leon or Alexander. In Greek legend, Leander was the powerful figure who swam across the Hellespont every night to visit his beloved Hero, a priestess of Venus.
Combining the Latin words Leo and Andros, this name has a cool, animal-related meaning, that lends it strength and bravery. A once familiar name in the US, it fell out of favor back in the 40s, though in the last decade, it has nearly doubled in use with almost 120 babies receiving the name in 2023.

While Leander is in the Norwegian Top 100 and the Nameberry Top 200, elsewhere, the Spanish variant Leandro or the French Leandre tend to be favored.
