Derived from a Spanish title of the Virgin Mary, Guadalupe, Lupe has both a spiritual and animal meaning. In relation to its long form, it is associated with a convent in Spain and the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to a Mexican man in the 16th-century. Taken as a stand-alone name, it derives from the Latin word for "wolf", lupus.

Appearing in the US Top 1000 for boys and girls in the first half of the 20th-century, it fell out of fashion in the 60s, and a recent year saw it given to just 7 boys and 9 girls respectively. In comparison, 244 girls and 31 boys were called Guadalupe the same year, while alternative short form Lupita was used 38 times.

Old-school nicknames for boys are back, and Lenn is a great candidate for revival. Single-N Len may not be as cool as this Dutch version, originally a nickname for Lennart.

Lucasta was invented by seventeenth century poet Richard Lovelace for a collection of poems dedicated to a lover named Lucy, and is familiar through the Eugene O'Neill play and film Anna Lucasta. Lucasta is a distinctive, rarely used choice and a logical extension of the Luke/Luc/Luca names.

Lucho is a warm, friendly masculine name of Spanish origin. It functions primarily as a diminutive of names like Luis (Spanish form of Louis) or Luciano. Popular throughout Latin America, especially in countries like Peru, Colombia, and Chile, Lucho carries a sense of familiarity and affection. The name has strong cultural associations with Spanish-speaking communities and often evokes a sense of closeness and informality. Despite its technical status as a nickname, many people are formally named Lucho on their birth certificates. The name has a strong, masculine sound while remaining approachable and unpretentious. In sporting contexts, particularly soccer, many famous Latin American athletes have been known by this name, adding to its cultural significance and appeal.

Sour or sweet? Enough like Lennon, Leonard, and Clement to work, or best left in the fruit basket? That's up to you to decide, but Lemon has been appearing in the US charts for boys since the 1880s.

Currently more popular for girls (given to 50 in 2021, and 29 in a more recent year), Lemon has been out of the charts for boys since the 90s, but that's not to say it won't ever return, given the interest in wild word names in recent years.

One thing to bear in mind is that Lemon is sometimes used as a slang term with a couple of meanings. It may refer to: a defective and faulty car or gadget; to an unhelpful person who won't take action (as in, standing there like a lemon); and, in a more niche (and perhaps slightly outdated?) way, for explicit content in fanfiction. Make of that what you will.

Lemuel, Lemoine, and Lonan might be similar sounding options,
