Lumen is a Latin word meaning "light", and the term used for the measurement of light output (making it an attractive choice for science-buffs).
The name was used for a female character in the TV series Dexter (played by Julia Stiles), and a real-life bearer is the American (male) artist Lumen Martin Winter.

Though little used as a first name, Loa will be familiar to many from the name of Hawaii's most famous volcano, Mauna Loa, on the Big Island.

Lexus, an automotive newcomer, has recently entered the Top 1000 -- more because of its association, we fear, with the status symbol car than its relation to the name Alexis. If you love this name, do your child a favor and make it Alexis or at least spell it Lexis.

In Arthurian legend, Lancelot was one of the most dashing of the Knights of the Round Table who eventually had an affair with Queen Guinevere: it makes for a romantic story-- but perhaps overly romantic-- name.

An older spelling is Launcelot, as seen in Shakespeare's Launcelot Gabbo in The Merchant of Venice and two Tobias Smollett novels.

Short form Lance has had an independent life of his own.

Sweet, enchanting Lilou is considered both a pet name from the Occitan language (spoken in Provence in the south of France), and a compound name, blending floral Lili with classic Louise. It peaked in France back in 2009 when it reached #12, and while it has now fallen in popularity, it remains in the Top 200.

The name first began to catch on back in the late 1990s, following the release of the 1997 film The Fifth Element, featuring a character called Leeloominaï (meaning "precious stones" in film's fictional language). Known by Leeloo, the character pushed alternative spelling Lilou into the Top 500 the year after the film was released.

Also appearing as Lylou, and more rarely as Liloo and Leelou (both of which did rank in the French charts when Lilou was at its peak), the name is currently in the Top 500 in the Netherlands and the Top 200 in Belgium, while in the US, just 12 girls recieved the name in a recent year.

Lior connects with several factors stylish for Israeli names: It's short, it's unisex, and it has an uplifting nature theme. Lior might make a more modern spin on Leah.

Lexington is rising as a place name used just about evenly for the genders. For Americans, it's got a patriotic ring, given the importance of Lexington, Massachusetts in the Revolutionary War. Lexington, Kentucky, in horse country, is another famous place with the name.

Gentle and easy going, but with an undertone of edginess, Lemmy could be a diminutive of the Hebrew Lemuel or borrowed from musician, songwriter, and founder of the band Motorhead, Lemmy (Ian Fraser) Kilmister. From the Hebrew, it means "for God", while from its pop cultural origins, it is supposedly derived from the phase "lemmy (lend me) a quid 'til Friday".

Succinct and simple in spelling, Leda is a currently rare choice from Greek mythology with that appealing four-letter, ending in -a format of Lyra, Maia, Vada, Veda, and Nora. Borne by a Spartan queen in classic Greek myth, Leda was the mother of Helen of Troy, Clytemnestra, and the twins, Castor and Pollux. All were fathered by Zeus, who assaulted her in the form of a swan.

Familiar in Brazil and a Top 1000 choice in the US in the late 19th-century, Leda was given to just 12 girls in a more recent year, with parents put off, perhaps, by the myth. Nevertheless, if you can look beyond that, Leda has plenty of potential: unique, simple, and pretty.

Pronounced as LEE-duh or LAY-duh in English and as LEH-dah in Italian and Greek, the exact meaning is unknown, though "woman, wife" is one possibility, while other sources link it to the similar Leta ("glad, happy") via the Latin laetus.

Leda

Lorcan is a name rich in Irish history as belonging to several kings, including the grandfather of the most famous high king of Ireland, Brian Boru. Lorcan O'Toole, known in English as Laurence O'Toole, is the patron saint of Dublin, so it's not too surprising that Irish-born actor Peter O'Toole named his son Lorcan.
In the Harry Potter epic, Lorcan is the twin son of Luna Lovegood Scamander.
Strong, easy to pronounce and spell, Lorcan is an Irish name that would stand out from the more common crop of Connors and Liams.
