Dog Names That Start With D

One of those ultimate cool-girl names, played by Keira Knightley in a movie about a supermodel-turned-bounty hunter, but kids might associate it with the game. High profile British designer India Hicks used it for her daughter. As a girls' nameit's still very rare, used in 2015 in the US for only seven baby girls.

Drusilla is an ancient Roman name, (probably) borne by descendants of Antony and Cleopatra, and is one of the 'illa' names that are ready for a comeback, especially with its cute short form Dru.
Drusilla appears in the New Testament as the wife of Felix (twin alert?), and later made appearances in Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone and Faulkner's The Unvanquished. Drusilla is a vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and was a long-running character on the soap The Young and the Restlass.
An alternate spelling is Drucilla.

Drusilla

A sweet-meaning and sounding name dating back to the Roman Empire, and later found in the antebellum South, Dulcie has in the modern era been heard most often in Australia.
In Agatha Christie's mystery Murder on the Links, there are twin sisters named Dulcie and Bella, who were a vaudeville duo known as "The Dulcibella Kids." In Don Quixote, the hero's love is Dulcinea.

In Georgian mythology, Dali is the goddess of hunting. The origins of her name are disputed — some scholars claim it comes from the Georgian word for morning, dila, while others claim links to words for "demon" and "god".

Dali is also used as a short form of the Spanish name Dalia — a variation of Dahlia — or inspired by the artistic surname Dalí. British comedian Noel Fielding chose this name for his first daughter.

Dali

A Dorothy nickname name with a measure of nostalgic charm. Kids will associate it with the funny fish character voiced by Ellen DeGeneres in the Pixar animated instant classic Finding Nemo.

Dory

Dagger is one of the new badass baby names, a sharp and scary choice that some parents may feel arm their child for battle in a cruel modern world.

Dagger

A Damian relative and the name of an ancient Spanish pope with modern possibilities.

Damaso

Prime example of the aggressive word names that are an off-the-grid branch of the new macho names. Makes Cannon, Maverick, and Ranger feel almost soft and sensitive by comparison.

Danger

Delmer is kind of a smoosh of two dated names, Delmar and Elmer, that does not improve on either. While Elmer is making a return as a Geek Chic name, Delmar was given to only 14 baby boys last year while Delmer is extinct.

Demon is probably best left as an edgy nickname or chosen moniker than put on the birth certificate. Typically associated with evil or familiar spirits, it could also be considered an Ancient Greek name, meaning "the people".

The protagonist of Barbara Kingsolver's David Copperfield adaptation, Demon Copperhead, is actually called Damon, which, along with Damien, might be a more wearable choice.

Demon

Vintage surname that's fallen out of use, but perhaps deserves a revival.

Dewitt

Django — the D is silent as most everyone now knows — the nickname of the great Belgian-born jazz guitarist Django (originally Jean Baptiste) Reinhardt, makes a dynamic musical choice for any jazz aficionado. Reinhardt's nickname "Django" is Romani for "I awake." The name has become more familiar with the release of and acclaim for the Quentin Tarantino film Django Unchained.

Delicia

Fashionably Continental and much fresher than Dominique, though it's been used since the Middle Ages. Dominica can be spelled any number of ways, from Dominika to Domenica, but we prefer this version.
Dominica is also a Caribbean Island, making this a place name as well as a classic girl name.
Hipper cousin Domino was a Bond Girl, a character played by Keira Knightley, and the name chosen for her daughter by British designer India Hicks. Dominy is an interesting unisex spin.

Pronunciation would not be obvious to Americans.

An early unisex nature name that has been surpassed by others, Dale is still a simple, sylvan and serene option.
Most of Dale's recent best known bearers – father and son race drivers Dale Earnhart, glass sculptor Dale Chihuly – are male, but if you look further back to her heyday as a girls' name (she was Number 237 in 1952), you'll find singing cowgirl Dale Evans (born France Octavia) and Flash Gordon's gal, Dale Arden.

Dale

The bright yellow weed lends itself to a creative baby name, although we don't recommend the nickname Dandy.

Dandelion

Dariel is one of many similar forms and variations of different names—Dara, Dariela, Daria and Darya—that are all unusual and pretty if not quite authentic-feeling.

Dariel

A bright and optimistic middle name choice.

Doctor is an honorific used as a name, somewhat like names such as Bishop, King, and Princess. Banned in New Zealand, Doctor can lead to the kind of confusion you may feel would be only positive for your child -- a bona fide Doctor before he even gets to kindergarten.

At its zenith in 1884, Doctor was used for 12 boys, but last year it didn't even clear the five-baby minimum to make it onto the Social Security extended list.
