Boy Dog Names That Start With B

Belden is a little-used surname-name that might work in this age of Belles.

Belden

Might be an honorific for novelist Saul Bellow, although bellowing is not the gentlest of sounds. Consider Saul instead.

Bellow

A kindly, virtue-adjacent name, it appears in Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, borne by the peacemaker friend who persuades Romeo to go to the party where he meets Juliet. Alas. A bold choice but with familiar nicknames Ben, Lio, and Bo.

Berilo

Deceptively close to Bernardo, but suaver.

Bernado

Bernal is a masculine name of Spanish origin, derived from the Germanic elements 'bern' meaning 'bear' and 'wald' meaning 'ruler' or 'powerful.' Historically, it was used as both a surname and given name in medieval Spain. The name carries connotations of strength and leadership, reflecting its etymological roots. Bernal remains relatively uncommon in English-speaking countries, giving it a distinctive quality for those seeking something unique. In Spanish-speaking regions, particularly those with strong Basque influences, the name enjoys more recognition. The name projects an air of dignity and old-world charm while offering the friendly nickname option of 'Bern.'

Bernal

Bernon is a masculine name with Germanic roots, likely derived from elements meaning 'bear' (bern) and possibly 'strength' or 'protection.' It can be considered a variant of names like Vernon or Bernard, though with its own distinct character. Bernon has maintained a steady but uncommon presence throughout Western naming history, never reaching widespread popularity but persisting across generations. The name carries a dignified, somewhat old-world charm that evokes images of steadfastness and reliability. In modern usage, Bernon might appeal to parents seeking a traditional-sounding name that isn't commonly heard, maintaining the strong consonant sounds of classic masculine names while offering a unique alternative to more popular choices.

Bernon

Long a royal nickname in England, it's coming back there along with Archie and Alfie. British singer Kate Bush calls her little boy Bertie.

Bertie

Berto is a masculine name primarily used as a diminutive of names like Alberto, Roberto, Humberto, or Norberto. It has Latin origins, derived from Germanic elements like 'beraht' meaning 'bright' or 'famous.' Common in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese-speaking cultures, Berto has a warm, friendly quality while maintaining masculine strength. Though less frequently used as a standalone given name, Berto has gained some independent usage, particularly in Latin American and Southern European communities. The name has a concise, international appeal that travels well across language boundaries. Its familiar sound pattern makes it accessible, while its relative rarity as a formal name gives it a distinctive quality for those seeking something brief yet connected to traditional naming patterns.

Berto

This name of famed philosopher, mathematician and Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell becomes slightly more plausible with the French pronunciation, bare-TRAHN. Another noted bearer is French director and screenwriter Bertrand Tavernier.

Bertrand

Bevis

The quintessential midcentury nickname, famously found in Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman."

Biff is late 19th century slang meaning to "hit", so Biff may have originated as a nickname for a tough guy. We'd object to it as a name, but it's hard to imagine anyone using it today outside of a symbolic name in a play.

Biff

The name of the protagonist in Richard Wright's 1940 novel Native Son.

Bigger

When Kate Hudson named her second son Bingham and announced that she would be calling him Bing, it put this zingy nickname name out on the table. Before that, there was only one, further nicknamed Der Bingle -- and he was really Harry Lillis Crosby.
And nowadays it's also a Microsoft search engine--but in any case, Bing has a lot of zing and could fit in with the likes of Brooks, Banks, Riggs, and Briggs. No babies have been called Bing in recent years, however.

Bing may also be associated with a Chinese name meaning "soldier" or "ice" depending on the kanji. While Bing is typically a surname, it may occasionally be listed as a given name in English speaking countries, due to the difference in name order in Chinese.

Bing

Bingo

Properly spelt Bình in Vietnamese, this is a very popular name for both sexes. The pronunciation is usually Anglicized as "BIN", but the middle vowel is more like the U in "burn".

Binh

A name that's unusual in that changing the i to a y -- as in Byrd -- makes it more masculine.

Bird

Bix is a cool and jazzy nickname name, thanks to that final x. It's largely associated with the legendary and influential cornet player (and inspiration for the novel Young Man With a Horn), Bix Beiderbecke. He was born Leon Bismark Beiderbecke and his nickname derived from his middle name.
Bix could easily fit in with cousins Jax, Dax, etc.
