This is a rich, melodic shortening of the popular girls' name Amelia that can stand on its own. There are several figures in Greek myth named Melia, most notably a daughter of Oceanus. The Meliae are nymphs associated with trees.

Manuela is one feminine form that's more energetic than the male original, and is worth considering if you're seeking an easily assimilated Spanish name.
In the 1948 film The Pirate, set in the Caribbean village of Calvados, Judy Garland plays a spirited senorita named Manuela. Manuela Santos is a fictional character in Degrassi: The Next Generation and there is a Manuela in the James Bond film Moonraker.

Mirabel is one of those names that's not on the Top 1000 but ought to be, and undoubtedly will be soon following the release of Disney's 2021 Encanto. Mirabel is the film's quirky and highly relatable heroine. Mirabel had a significant rise in 2022, going from 34 births in 2021 to 153 births in 2022. You'll probably be hearing more of this name thanks to the newest Pixar film, featuring Princess Merida, the first Pixar princess--a feisty, athletic, independent medieval Scottish girl with wild red hair. Her name, however, is not Scottish, but a Spanish place name found in both Spain and Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.

Will Merida be the next Ariel? Stay tuned. Read more about Merida and other Disney Princess Names in our featured blog.

Merida

A pretty and little-known Spanish smoosh name, combining Maria with Celia. As such, it may have a number of meanings.

On one hand, it could simply be interpreted as meaning "Maria of the Heavens", perhaps as a celebration of the Virgin Mary, however, you could also mix the various meanings of Maria with that of Celia, to give you "drop of the sea in heaven", "bitter heavens" or "beloved heaven".
Maricela was popular in the US in the 70s and 90s, peaking in 1976 when it reached #453 on the charts. The alternative form, Maricel, is popular in the Philippines.

Maricela

This feminine form of Mael has the distinctive "aelle" ending found in Brittany. In the French spelling Maëlle, it is a Top 100 girls' name in France.

Mona had more than a moment in the sun, peaking in 1950 at Number 230 but falling off the Top 1000 completely in the late 1980s. Its similarity to the word "moaner" undercuts the appeal of its simplicity. In one recent year, fewer than 100 baby girls received the name, and we don't see it reviving any time soon.

Mona

Used especially in Latin America, this would make a funky spin on Maria.

The meaning of Maria is uncertain, but theories include "drop of the sea" (from Hebrew roots mar "drop" and yam "sea"); "bitter" (from Hebrew marah "bitterness"); and "beloved" (from the Egyptian root mr).

Maritza

A Spanish term of endearment that first appeared on the charts in 2005, and is slowly gaining traction.

Minnie was wildly popular at the turn of the last century — it was the fifth or sixth most popular name throughout the 1880s — but is completely obscure in the US today. Blame Mickey's girlfriend. Regardless, it's possible that the up and coming trend toward old-fashioned nickname-names — think Maisie, Mamie, Millie — may give Minnie (all on its own, not as a short form of anything) a new moment in the sun.

In fact, Minnie has already broken in to the England and Wales Top 1000 and as of 2023, it ranked at #444. Traditionally used as a short form of Wilhelmina, Minnie could also be used as a nickname for a variety of names, including Minerva, Martina, Marin, Mary, Hermione, Jasmine, and Araminta.

Minnie Driver (born Amelia) has given it some modern celeb cred and there have been characters named Minnie in Dickens's Little Dorrit and Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra. Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" is a jazz classic, while "Minnie the Minx" (full name Hermione Makepeace) appears in the long-running British comic, The Beano.

Short, concise, and cheerful, Merit is a name with several possible roots. From its English origins, it could be viewed as a virtue name, celebrating commendable good behaviour. Equally, it could be seen as a streamlined form of Merritt, an Old English surname meaning "boundary". Rising in the US, albeit slowly, Merit may be given to more babies in coming years, due to the recent interest in unusual virtue names, last names as first names, and for word names.

Alternatively, Merit can be used as a variation of the Estonian Maret or the Swedish Marit, both of which ultimately derive from the classic Margaret. In this case, the name would mean "pearl".

Finally, Merit (also spelled Meryt) was an Ancient Egyptian name, derived from mryt meaning "beloved one". It is the feminine form of mrj or Meri, meaning "loved" or "desired". This could then link the name to the Biblical Mary, which some scholars believe came from the same Egyptian root, to mean "beloved".

Maris is an unusual and appealing name that has never appeared in the U.S. Top 1000, overshadowed by its twentieth century elaboration, Marisa/Marissa. It derives from the phrase "Stella Maris," star of the sea, one of the many epithets of the Virgin Mary, and became familiar via the unseen (but unliked) character of sitcom Frasier's ex-sister-in-law.

As a surname, Maris is associated with legendary NY Yankee, Roger Maris.

Miri is a charming feminine name with diverse cultural roots. In Hebrew, it means 'bitter' or 'rebellion,' though it's often associated with Miriam. In Swahili, Miri suggests 'mystery,' while in Japanese it can mean 'truth' or 'reason.' The name appears in various cultures, including as a Maori name meaning 'twine' or as a diminutive for Miriam or Miranda in Western contexts. Miri has gained appreciation for its brevity and melodic quality. In popular culture, the name received attention through characters in works like Star Trek. Its simplicity makes it easy to pronounce across languages, appealing to parents seeking a short but meaningful international name with a gentle, feminine sound.

Maude, also spelled Maud, is a lacy, mauve-tinted name that was wildly popular a hundred years ago, but has been rarely heard in the past fifty. Some stylish parents are starting to choose it again, especially as a middle.

Maude's early popularity was influenced by the Tennyson poem that included the oft-quoted line, "Come into the garden, Maude." Then, in the 1970s, along came the sitcom Maude, featuring the vociferous and opinionated character Maude Finlay, putting a very different spin on the name. But enough decades have now passed for the name to have settled back into its soft, sweet pastel image.

Parents today are more likely to associate the name with young actress Maude Apatow, who rose to fame in HBO's Euphoria. She may be the catalyst needed to finally popularize her name again.

The Maud spelling has British royal associations via the daughter of Edward VII, who later became Queen of Norway; Maud Gonne was a famous Irish political activist.

Maude

The sort of oh-so-French name that's falling out of favor now.
