"born of the yew tree"

Ewen Origin and Meaning

The name Ewen is a boy's name meaning "born of the yew tree".

More popularly anglicized as Ewan and Euan, this is a spelling variation of the Scottish and Irish name Eoghann, likely meaning "born of the yew tree", though some sources connect it to the Latin Eugene. This form is the preferred spelling in France, however, where it ranks in the Top 200.

This form was chosen by writer D.K. Broster, for one of the central characters in her 1925 novel, The Flight of the Heron.

Given to just 5 boys in 2023, it saw significantly more use in 2024 when it was given to 37, perhaps in memory of, or inspired by, actor Ewen MacIntosh of The Office fame.
