Miss Randriana's Girl Name Mix

This is a list of girls' names I've used in creative writing projects. All of them are names I enjoy and would love to see more of in the real world.

Anastasia is a lovely yet very long name, and Stasia is a fresher, classier short form than Stacy.

Stasia

Brylin

Fashionably Continental and much fresher than Dominique, though it's been used since the Middle Ages. Dominica can be spelled any number of ways, from Dominika to Domenica, but we prefer this version.
Dominica is also a Caribbean Island, making this a place name as well as a classic girl name.
Hipper cousin Domino was a Bond Girl, a character played by Keira Knightley, and the name chosen for her daughter by British designer India Hicks. Dominy is an interesting unisex spin.

Tilden is mostly seen as a male name, but we love it just as much for a girl. It's an androgynous answer to Tilda, and still gets you the super-sweet nickname Tilly (or Tildy).

Windy

Mauve-tinted nickname with vintage charm that could just follow in the footsteps of ABBIE. More prominent now as the nickname for the Texas A&M sports teams.

Aggie

Briony may be the variation and Bryony the original, but many parents will see this as the more authentic-feeling version of this attractive botanical name. Melodic and bright, it was once a Top 400 name in the UK back in the 90s but has since fallen out of favor, as has Bryony.

The name of a vine once used for medicinal purposes, Briony is derived from the Greek bryo meaning "to swell, sprout, grow", likely in reference to the plants ability to climb. As such, Briony isn't related to the similar sounding Brian, though it could nevertheless make an honor name for one.
A literary choice, Briony appears in Ian McEwan's popular novel, Atonement, in which the young, imaginative Briony Tallis sets the plot in motion. In the screen adaptation, she was played by Saoirse Ronan, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

In the most recent stats, no girls were called Briony (or Bryony) in the US, while in the UK, just over 30 babies were given the names collectively. With potential nicknames Bonny, Brie, or Bee, Briony could make an unexpected yet familiar option.

Ellaria Sand is a slightly obscure character in HBO's Game of Thrones, part of the notoriously half-baked Dorne plot that bedeviled later seasons of the show. She was paramour to Oberyn Martell, mother to several of the so-called "Sand Snakes" and murderer of Myrcella Baratheon. Not exactly a primo namesake, despite a fine performance from Indira Varma.

And yet! This is actually a Game of Thrones name we think may have legs. In part because Ellaria Sand isn't a very well-known character. And her name takes the trendy Ellery and adds the feminine "-ia" for a touch of romance. Place name Illyria is another good option in the same vein.

Variation of Safina or elaboration of Sofia makes for a unique by on-trend Arabic name for girls.

Whimsy is a new entry to the ever-expanding word name lexicon, sister for Pixie and Bliss. While it has an undeniable offbeat English aristocratic charm (maybe we're thinking of Dorothy Sayers' fictional detective Lord Peter Wimsey, whose middle name was Death?), we see this as more fitting for a middle than a first name.

Infamous baby namers Nara and Lucky Blue Smith welcomed a daughter named Whimsy Lou in 2024, which is likely to increase this name's profile significantly.

Texie is a feminine name with American origins, possibly emerging as a diminutive form or feminine version of Tex, which itself references Texas. This charming, distinctive name carries associations with Southern American culture and may have originated as a nickname before becoming a given name. Texie has a playful, friendly quality with its short form and 'ie' ending, typical of affectionate diminutives. While extremely uncommon today, it may have experienced modest usage in southern states during the early to mid-20th century. The name evokes a certain nostalgic, down-to-earth charm associated with rural American heritage. Its uniqueness makes it stand out while maintaining an accessible pronunciation.

The singer known as Pink (born Alecia) brought this hue onto the name-possibility palette, especially as a middle choice. Could Pink be the next Blue?

Estie is a charming feminine name that typically functions as a diminutive of Esther, which comes from the Persian word for 'star.' It can also be a nickname for Estelle, meaning 'star' in Latin, or other names beginning with 'Est-'. Estie combines antiquity with a playful, modern feel through its diminutive ending. The name carries a warm, friendly quality while maintaining connections to its more formal roots. Though never widely popular as a given name in its own right, Estie has seen occasional use in Jewish communities where Esther holds particular significance due to its biblical connections. The name's brevity and sweet sound give it an endearing quality, while its relative rarity makes it distinctive without being difficult to pronounce or spell.

Estie

One of the original so-weird-it's-cruel celebrity baby names doesn't sound quite so impossible with the resurgence of virtue names. But be charitable and choose Charity instead.

Chastity

Ottie is a feminine name with multiple possible origins. It may function as a diminutive of names containing the Germanic element "ot" meaning wealth or fortune, such as Ottilie, Ottoline, or Charlotte. Alternatively, it could be a variation of Ottilia, derived from the Germanic name element "ot" or "od" meaning "wealth" or "prosperity." In some contexts, Ottie might serve as a nickname for Otto in masculine usage. The name has a charming, vintage quality consistent with the revival of short, sweet names from the early 20th century. With its simple spelling and friendly sound, Ottie creates an immediate impression of warmth and approachability. Although uncommon in contemporary usage, it fits with the trend of reclaiming vintage diminutives as full legal names.

Rosia is a feminine name with Latin roots, likely derived from 'rosa' meaning 'rose,' the beloved flower symbolizing love and beauty. This melodic name can be considered a variant of Rosa or Rosie, with a slightly more elaborate sound. Throughout history, Rosia has appeared sporadically across different regions, particularly in Latin American and Southern European communities. The name carries a warm, romantic quality while remaining relatively uncommon in most English-speaking countries. For parents seeking a distinctive floral-inspired name that maintains classic origins but offers a unique twist, Rosia provides a beautiful alternative to more common rose-derived names.

A sweet and rare nickname for Charlotte. Lollie would also work as a short form of other names with a strong L sound, such as Laura, Lauren, Dolores, Lola, Lorelei, Louisa, Elodie, Lois, Ottilie, Olive, Ololade, and beyond. Also spelled as Lolly, it featured in the US Top 1000 back in the late 19th century, and when combined with its alternative spelling, more than 60 girls have received it as a stand-alone since the 2000s.

Associated with lollypops, ice lollies, and Australia candy, Lollie may appeal to those who like Dolly, Birdie, Coco, Millie, and Dulcie.

Intriguing and alluring with the feel of names like Delyth and Lilith, Tanith is the name of an ancient Phoenician goddess of the moon, love, and fertility. The patron of the city of Carthage in North Africa, and the consort of its supreme god, Tanith is also spelled as Tanit, Tanis, and Tanitha.

The exact meaning of the name is unknown, however, theories include that it means "serpent lady", "river", or "smoky one".

Milou and her near-identical twin Malou are adorable names popular throughout Europe; they're contractions of Marie or Mary and Lou or Louise. The Malou spelling will probably be easier for English speakers to pronounce; Milou may be conflated with Milo.

Fun fact: Milou is the French name of the dog Snowy in Tintin.
