Webster is one of several W-starting surname names back on the drawing board, now that it has recovered from its childlike eighties sitcom identity.
Webster was used in respectable numbers in the past--it reached a high of Number 388 in 1890--but like several other surnames starting with W, fell off the list completely in the 1940s. With its engaging nickname Webb, we can see it making a comeback.
Webster Young was a jazz trumpeter who played with most of the greats, but more prominent bearers wore Webster as a surname--in particular statesman Daniel and lexicographer Noah.
Fun feminist fact: Webster was originally an occupational name for a female weaver, though it's used exclusively for boys now.

Fowler is a masculine name of English origin that began as an occupational surname. It originally referred to a person who hunted wild birds or was a bird-catcher (from the Old English 'fugelere'). As a first name, Fowler is quite uncommon, representing the trend of using traditional surnames as given names. This practice became more popular in the United States during the 20th century, especially for boys. Fowler has a distinguished, somewhat aristocratic sound that appeals to parents seeking a name with historical roots and a professional tone. Its rarity as a first name makes it distinctive while still being recognizable and straightforward to pronounce and spell.

Law is a masculine name with multiple origins and meanings. As an English surname-turned-first-name, it derives from the Old English 'hlaw' meaning 'hill' or as a shortened form of Lawrence, meaning 'from Laurentum' (an ancient Italian city). The name also carries obvious associations with legal systems and moral principles. While traditionally uncommon as a first name, Law gained some recognition through actor Jude Law. Its brevity makes it distinctive in an era of longer male names, offering a strong, commanding presence in just one syllable. The name's simplicity, powerful connotations of justice, and contemporary feel have attracted parents seeking something unconventional yet meaningful with professional gravitas.

Original and straightforward, but with little appeal.

Seymour

The Brits say BARK-lee, but we pronounce it the same as the name of the California college: either way it's quite pretentious and of another era.

Berkeley

For 007 fans, a great middle name choice -- or even a first, Bond fits into the trend of one-syllable surname-style names like Banks, Brooks, Boone, Beck, and Briggs. As an English surname, it comes from Bóandi, a Norse name meaning "peasant, farmer".

Bond could also be viewed as a word name, referring to a connection between people, whether that's based on feelings, interests, beliefs, or blood. More broadly, it denotes the joining together of two different things, a solemn promise, or an official financial agreement on repaying money. As such, Bond may appeal to fans of Truce, Trust, and Teller.

Ten boys were given the name in a recent year.

Most color names, like Scarlet and Violet, are definitely female, but not this one. Brown is as rich and warm as the tone it denotes, though we must admit the Italian version Bruno has more spark and substance.

This British surname has a somewhat aristocratic air, which ties in to its association with the early American boxing champ "Gentleman Jim" Corbett. Also borne by actor and country singer John Corbett, it blends the sounds of the more popular Corbin, Cory, Barrett, Bennett, and Beckett.

The name comes from the French corbeau paired with a the diminutive suffix, -et. It may have started out as a nickname for someone with dark hair (like Corbin did).

A fen is an English marshland, and Fenn came into use as a habitational surname for a person who dwelt near one. Now, it's a rarely used first name too, a handsome alternative to Finn.

Fenn

Godfrey was very popular in the Middle Ages, but today you're more likely to hear it as a surname than a first name. It has a solid, old-man charm, but a couple of possible deal-breakers: the first syllable being God, and no obvious nickname. Goff, maybe? For a different feel, we also like the Italian artist's version Giotto.

Grainger is a masculine name that originated as an English occupational surname referring to a granary keeper or grain merchant, derived from the Old French 'grangier.' As a first name, it represents the trend of transforming traditional surnames into given names, providing a distinguished and professional air. The name conveys associations with reliability, agricultural heritage, and steady provision. Though uncommon as a first name, Grainger has an appealing sophistication with its two-syllable rhythm and soft 'g' sounds. It may appeal to parents seeking a name with English roots that sounds both traditional and distinctive. Notable references include the British composer Percy Grainger, which adds a cultural and artistic dimension to the name.

Huston is a masculine name with English origins, primarily derived from an English surname meaning 'Hugh's town' or 'Hugh's settlement.' Sometimes considered a variation of Houston, Huston has established itself as a distinct given name with connections to both place names and family names. The name gained recognition partly through association with legendary film director John Huston and the Huston family of actors and filmmakers. As a first name, Huston projects strength and a certain artistic, intellectual quality. While never extremely common, it appears periodically throughout the 20th and 21st centuries in the United States. Huston appeals to parents seeking a name with a sophisticated sound and historical feel that isn't widely used, offering the rare combination of being recognizable yet distinctive.
