A Huge List Of Surnames

A huge list of surnames, gathered from multiple different places. I hope you all enjoy it!

Carey is a surname name that works equally well on babies of all genders: Jazz great Carey Bell and motorcross champion Carey Hart are just two examples of how handsome this name can be for a boy. Also spelled as Cary (as in Old-Hollywood actor, Cary Grant), it was popular for boys in the 50s and remained in the US charts from the 1880s to the 1990s.

Usually considered an anglicized form of the Irish surname Ó Ciardha, the name ultimately comes from ciar meaning "black". It is possible however that it may be used as a variant of the Welsh Carew ("fort on the hill!); a twist on the Irish mac Fiachra ("son of Fiachra, son of the crow"); a name from the Byronic root karɨd ("to love); or an anglicized for of the German Gehring ("spear").

While Carey is a unisex choice, it reached great heights for girls in the US back in the 1970s, likely thanks to its similarities with Carrie, Kerry, Cheri, and Caroline. These days, it's leaning masculine again, albeit in very small numbers: just 18 boys and 5 girls were given the name in a recent year.

Spirited and bubbly, but handsome and preppy too, Darby is a surname style choice that fits in well with the likes of Alby and Lennox.

Derived ultimately from Old Norse, as a surname, it likely emerged in reference to the English town Derby (pronounced the same).

Darby works particularly well with an O' surname, as in 'Darby O'Gill and the Little People' and it could also be a unisex option (and is now more popular for girls in the US).

Patrick Dempsey chose it for one of his twin boys back in 2007.

Long heard as a last name, as in venerable poet Robert, U.K. talk show host David, British actress Sadie and old Jack Frost, Frost has suddenly entered the scene as a possible first, along with other seasonal weather names like Winter and Snow.
Some forward-thinking parents are beginning to warm to the icy simplicity of Frost, placing it among the most fitting names for winter babies.

Gale for boys is more a storm name than a short form of Abigail. Since Gale has resurfaced as the name of Liam Hemsworth's daring character in The Hunger Games, it has new force for boys.

This shimmery lunar name is rising in popularity as a middle name for both sexes, while as a given name, it's quietly but more popularly selected for girls, with 52 given the name in a recent year in the US. By comparison, it was selected for just 13 boys.

More often used in Britain than here, where most names ending in ville fall into the unthinkable class, this might make an exception via fans of the musical Neville Brothers.

Charles Dickens used the name for a character in his unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Rollin is a masculine name with related to the more familiar Roland. It might also be derived from an Old French surname meaning 'little roll' or 'small land.'

Used in English-speaking countries since the 19th century, Rollin enjoyed modest popularity in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, it's an old-fashioned name that would make a distinctive choice.

Unusual word names with a strong, sometimes last-name feel are on the rise, from Chosen to Valor, to Wilder, Ford, and Ledger. With similar sounds to Jake and Waylon, and with a stirring meaning, could Wake be one more parents turn to in coming years?

Deriving from the Old English wōc and wacian, Wake is associated with rising from sleep, with gaining awareness, and with rousing or stirring something up in another person. This could give it subtle spiritual ties or feel symbolic of gaining knowledge and understanding.

As a name, Wake could come from Waca, an Old English nickname given to someone who was watchful and vigilant, or someone who had to be on watch and keep an eye on danger.

A perhaps more morbid association is that Wake also evokes the party after a funeral or a vigil kept by the body of the dead. This may well put people off from using it, or it could lend it a slightly darker edge.

Given to 16 boys in a recent year, Wake is rare but quietly used.

Deriving from an English locational surname meaning "white island", Whitney was in rare but regular use for boys in the US until the early 1960s, when actress Whitney Blake popularized it for girls. It received a further big boost on the girls' side in the 1980s, thanks to singer Whitney Houston. Now falling rapidly down the rankings, it could be time to reclaim this one for the boys, if only as a neat way to cool-guy nickname Whit.

Buxton

This English word name might seem like a strange choice, but it could reflect a parent's desire for their child to be able to cope with anything life brings. In a recent year, 9 baby boys were named Cope.

Fenton is the kind of surname name that's starting to sound almost like a normal first name these days. While it made a brief appearance on the Top 1000 in the late 1800s, today it's distinctive but in step with the times. And Fen as a nickname is undeniably cute -- a Ben of the future.

Fenton

A rarely used last-name-first-name, never as popular as cousins Garrett or Derek.

Garrick

The S may confuse English speakers, but it's a French classic.

Georges

One of those names that most Americans find just too too tea-sippingly British to consider; its meaning has led to occasional use for Capricorn boys.

Haywood is a masculine name of English origin that began as a surname referring to 'a person who lived near a fenced forest' or 'a forest guardian.' Combining the Old English elements 'haga' (enclosure or hedge) and 'wudu' (wood), it evokes imagery of wooded landscapes and natural protection.

As a first name, Haywood gained modest usage during the trend of adopting surnames as given names. It projects strength and reliability with a touch of rustic charm. The name carries a distinguished, somewhat old-fashioned quality that appeals to parents seeking dignified, nature-connected names.

Haywood

A familiar and usable last name turned first. Or you could look at it as a homophone of the verb howl, which gives it a wilder feel.
