Miss Randriana's Random Name Mix

Just a random bunch of usual and unusual names all mixed together. The only thing that ties them together is that I enjoy them all!

Sweet and spirited, kindly and handsome, posh and approachable, Toby is a versatile nickname, popular in the UK as a stand-alone choice, but familiar in the Netherlands and New Zealand too. In the US, it had its heyday in the 70s but has since been outranked by long form Tobias.

Derived from the Hebrew Tobiah, meaning "God is good" (or more specifically, "Yahwah is good"), it has appeared in everything from Shakespeare and Dickens to The Office and Gravity Falls.

Friendly and rugged at the same time, Anders is a Scandinavian form of the Andrew and Andreas family, used across Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and in the US. Consistently in the American Top 1000 since 2010, a recent year saw it given to around 300 boys.

Meaning "strong, manly, masculine", Anders ultimately comes from the Greek andreios and has been used in Sweden since at least the 14th century. Once common among priests and farmers in the medieval period, it went on to become the forth most popular Swedish boy name of all time.

Less popular than the patronymic Anderson in the US, it is likely said as AN-ders or AHN-ders in English. In Swedish, however, it's AN-dush, in Norwegian its AHN-nush, and in Danish, its AHN-us.

Trivia tidbits: The patronymic Andersson is the second most popular surname in Sweden, while in Denmark, Donald Duck is called Anders And.

The great African-American Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes put this one on the map, while actor Laurence Fishburne adopted it for his now grown son, born in 1987. Despite these popular associations, the name didn't make it into the US Top 1000 until 2013, and while it has remained in the charts, it has stayed towards the latter end.
Hughes was born James Mercer Langston Hughes, Langston being his mother's maiden name. The name itself derived from an Old English place name, that could be interpreted to mean "tall man's town", though "long stone" is an equally likely meaning.
Some similar choices are Lanford, Landon, Langford and Langley, while Kingston and Landon are more familiar options.

Mattie, which might be a short form of Martha, Matilda, or even Madeline, ranked among the Top 100 names for girls in the 1880s and in fact, has held a place among the Top 1000 for most of U.S. naming history. It fell off the popularity charts in 2015 and makes a cute, tomboyish option.

A literary choice, it appears in Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton.

Artemis, one of the key figures of the female Greek pantheon, is the ancient virgin goddess of the hunt, wilderness, animals, childbirth, and a protector of young girls, later associated with the moon. Artemis is the equivalent to the Roman Diana, but a fresher and more distinctive choice.
Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo, one of the twelve deities who lived on Mount Olympus, and has, in more recent years, been associated with the Artemis Lunar program. As such, it may appeal to fans of both mythology and space exploration.

The meaning of the name is largely unknown, but it's related to two Greek words meaning safe or butcher.
Artemas, on the other hand, is a male name, though some gender confusion could arise from the Artemis Fowl novels, making Artemis one of those rarer feminine names that has also switched into a unisex choice (rather than the other way round).

Appearing in the US charts (briefly) in the 2020s, it has been consistently in the England and Wales Top 1000 since 2018, given to around 40 girls a year. Nicknames Ari, Artie, Emmie, Issy, and Missy may further its appeal.

This surname has a modern yet old New England feel, perhaps because of the association with the transcendental teacher and reformer Bronson (born Amos Bronson) Alcott, father of Louisa May. (One-time sitcom star Bronson Pinchot's full name is Bronson Alcott Pinchot.) A more muscular image comes via tough guy Charles Bronson.

Soft yet solid, Cedric was invented by Sir Walter Scott for the noble character of the hero's father in Ivanhoe, presumed to be an altered form of the Saxon name Cerdic ("bounty"), or the Brythonic name Caratacus ("loved"), though surname Sedgewick ("sword place", "place of victory") may have provided inspiration too. A truly literary choice name was later also given to Little Lord Fauntleroy, the long-haired, velvet-suited, and lace-collared boy hero of the Frances Hodgson Burnett book, who became an unwitting symbol of the pampered mama's boy.
Since then that stereotype has been broken partly by the Harry Potter character, Cedric Diggory, played by Robert Pattinson in the movies, and by general renewed interest in other old-fashioned names, like Cecil, Conrad, Stanley, and Clyde. As such, Cedric has been dipping in and out of the US Top 1000 in recent years and in the latest count, in was given to around 240 boys.

A major favorite in France back in the 70s and 80s when it made the Top 10, some noteworthy Cedrics have included comedian and actor Cedric the Entertainer, footballer Cédric Soares, and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

Dash is a nickname that can stand on its own and sounds, well, dashing. Connected these days with Kardashian enterprises.
Dash can stand on its own—as is evidenced by its entry into the US Top 1000 in 2014—or as a nickname for Dashiell.

Sapphire goes waaaaay beyond Ruby and Pearl. This September birthstone, occasionally used a century ago, might be worth a reappraisal, perhaps as a Sophie/Sophia alternative. Sapphire is the pseudonym of Romona Lofton, who wrote the book Push, which was turned into the movie Precious. Sapphire entered the Top 1000 for the first time in 2022, and is proving to be one of the freshest gem names for girls. Another intriguing variation is the lovely Sapphira.

Lavender lags far behind sweet-smelling purple-hued sister names Violet and Lila, but is starting to get some enthusiastic attention from cutting-edge namers along with other adventurous nature names like Clementine and Marigold. In fact, 2024 saw it enter the US Top 1000 for the first time, when it was given to nearly 260 girls.

The flower's name derives from Latin lividus "bluish", influenced by lavō "wash" due to use of lavender in washing clothes. It has long been used in traditional medicine and in cooking for its sweet fragrance and soothing properties. But it also has a long history as a name, going back to the eighteenth century, when it was also used for boys.

Famous fictional namesakes include Lavender Brown, a witch character in the Harry Potter saga, and the eponymous heroine's best friend in Roald Dahl's Matilda.

Bobby is the quintessential mid-century nickname, the name of the son on Mad Men and overused to the point of cliche. Though Robert is still a highly popular choice, most Roberts today are called by their full name or Rob or Robbie rather than Bob or Bobby.

In the UK the term "bobby" is slang for a policeman.

Associated for half a century with Marlon Brando, who inherited the French-inflected name from his father, Marlon has been especially well used by African-Americans, including the Jackson and Wayans families. Though heard much less now than it was in the seventies, this could change as parents look to the names of old Hollywood stars.
Keith Richards, Dennis Miller, and (more recently) Monet Mazur all have sons named Marlon.

Classic yet spritely, Tatiana has long been familiar and popular in Russia and Eastern Europe, though it wasn't until the 80s that it caught on in the English-speaking world. With short forms Tiana, Tati, and Tanya, it is a versatile choice that has nevertheless seen a decline in use in recent year.

Tatiana was derived from Tatius, a Sabine-Latin family name of unknown origin, and notably borne by Titus Tatius, an ancient king who ruled over the ancient Italic tribe, the Sabines, who lived near Rome. The Romans used the name Tatius even after the Sabines died out and created the derivative forms Tatianus and Tatiana. The names were eventually disseminated throughout the Orthodox Christian world, including Russia.
Saint Tatiana, a third-century martyr, is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church, while Grand Duchess Tatiana Romanova, was one of the ill-fated daughters of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II. Also translated as Tatyana, the name appears in Alexander Pushkin's verse novel Eugene Onegin and the opera based on it, and it was used by Chekhov as well.
Tatiana Kennedy Schlossberg is the daughter of Caroline Kennedy, which helped make the name feel chic in France and the US in the 90s and early 2000s. Actress Tatiana Maslany (of Orphan Black), ice dancer Tatiana Navka, and comedian Tatiana Frank are other notable bearers of the name.

Tatiana peaked in 1999 in the US, when it ranked at Number 213, and while it had been on a slow decline since then anyway, it fell more rapidly in 2022 when the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out. It has since recovered slightly in the most recent stats, when it was given to 230 girls.

Turner is a name that's both preppy and painterly, recalling the exquisite watercolor seascapes of British painter J.M.W. Turner. An occupational name in the Taylor-Carter mold, Turner is a more distinctive choice than many of the usual suspects.

One first-name Turner namesake is Turner Catledge, the first Executive Editor of the New York Times, but for the most part its more notable bearers were surnamed Turner: Nat, the leader of a rebellion of enslaved people and subject of a William Styron novel; media mogul Ted; musicians Ike and Tina; and glamour girl Lana. In the movie Turner & Hooch, Tom Hanks was Det. Scott Turner and Hooch was the dog.

New York socialite and reality TV star Tinsley Mortimer introduced this name to the mainstream. Following her Gossip Girl cameo in 2008 and the airing of her own show, High Society in 2010, this once obscure choice began to climb the charts. It debuted in the US Top 1000 in 2016 and though 2023 saw it drop from the charts, it is still given to around 250 girls each year.

Derived from an English place name, Tinsley can mean "Tynni's meadow" or might reference to a few different towns in Great Britain. Also used as a surname, Tinsley is in tune with its more popular sister names: Kinsley, Presley, Oakley, Finley, and Paisley, to name a few. Boosted up by these on trend names, Tinsley's rise might also have been helped along by the character, Dawn Tinsley, from the popular TV show The Office and by child actress and social media star, Tinsley Price, who starred in the first series of Stranger Things. The year following release of the show did coincide with a jump in use of the name.

Reminiscent of glitz, glamor, and sparkly Christmas decorations, Tinsley may well re-enter the charts in coming years.

Strong and outdoorsy, yet pretty and queenly, Rhiannon was a once obscure Welsh name, brought into the mainstream in 1976, following Fleetwood Mac's flash hit song of the same title. It stormed into the US charts, climbing straight to #593 — and to give a better sense of just how influential the song was on the name, Rhiannon had only started appearing in the US stats in 1974, when it was given to 5 girls. By 1976, it was used 50 times more often: chosen for 272 babies.

Possibly derived from the Celtic name Rīgantonā, Rhiannon could mean "great queen" or "divine queen". In Welsh mythology, she is a strong, forthright leader, possessed of magic, intelligence, beauty, political strategy, and generosity. She faces trials and challenges after choosing her own consort, including an uncatchable horse, being accused of infanticide, and vengeance from a friend of her spurned lover.

The Welsh Rhiannon may be related to earlier Celtic goddesses, potentially Epona, a goddess of horses. Additionally, in she is considered a moon goddess in Celtic mythology, associated with rebirth, poetry, and beauty, and the owner of singing birds, who supposed wake spirits or grant sleep.

Popular in the UK and Australia in the 90s and 2000s, Rhiannon is currently more quietly used, making it a distinctive but familiar choice, similar in feel or style to Rhys, Arwen, and Ffion. Director Robert Rodriguez bestowed this sweet name on his first daughter while Jenna Dewan also hose it for her baby girl.

The Arabic Rihanna looks similar but is unrelated, deriving from Rayhana to mean "basil".

With diverse roots and meanings, Ayana is a cross-cultural possibility with Arabic, African, and Kazakh origin. Both Ayana and Ayanna enjoyed a spike of popularity in the 1990s, but have faded since then, though 246 girls were given the name in the US in a recent year, placing it just outside the Top 1000. It appeared in the Kazakhstani top 15 multiple times in the 2010s and recently ranked in the UK Top 500.

With Violet in vogue, this vibrant international variation has been on the rise since the 2010s. Vintage and floral like its more popular sister, Violetta has a slightly softer sound and a touch of extra flair. Given to 135 girls in a recent year, it also gets you to nicknames Etta, Vita, and Lettie.

Along with its flowery feel and colorful meaning, Violetta has several musical connections too. It is the name of the heroine of the Verdi opera La Traviata, which was in fact originally titled Violetta. Italian singer Violetta Zironi is a more recent bearer while in the 17th century, Violetta was used as an umbrella term for a variety of string instruments, including the violin and the viola.

Juno is an ancient name that feels as fresh as if it had been minted, well, not yesterday, but in 2007. Since the release of the popular indie film Juno, this lively but strong Roman goddess name has held new potential as a baby name. Currently in the UK Top 500 and used in The Netherlands too, Juno is on the rise in the US - and is 15 times more popular than it was before the release of the film.

In Roman mythology, Juno was the sister and wife of Jupiter (yes, you did read that right) and the mother of Mars and Vulcan. The patron goddess of Rome and protector of women and marriage and the goddess of finance, Juno's name is heard in Virgil's Aeneid, Shakespeare's The Tempest, and Sean O'Casey's 1924 play Juno and the Paycock. The deity's name is of uncertain origin, but likely derives from the root -iuwen, meaning young. With Jupiter and Minerva, she made the Capitoline triad, whose worship was at the very center of Roman religion.

With its strong but sweet sound, reminiscent of vintage June and contemporary Juniper, with its appealing but rare-for-girls -O ending, it is unsurprising perhaps that Juno is a Nameberry favorite and on the rise in the "real world". Given to around 170 girls in 2023 - and to nearly 50 boys, it joins Artemis as a traditionally feminine goddess name that is becoming a unisex option.

Actress Juno Temple and writer Juno Dawson are notable bearers of the name, while Coldplay's Will Champion chose Juno for one of his twins (whose brother is the kingly Rex).
