Succinct and sharp, Ira is one of the shortest Old Testament names, belonging to one of King David's thirty 'mighty warriors.' It was widely used in the US from the 1880s to the early 1930s (it was Number 57 on the Social Security list in 1881), but fell off completely in 1993, only to return in 2016. Currently, it is in the latter half of the US Top 1000, given to around 260 boys each year.

Beyond its Hebrew origins, Ira is also a unisex Sanskrit and Hindi name. Literally meaning "wind" in Sanskrit, it is the name of the wind-god in Hinduism. Elsewhere, it is used as a feminine name, a short form of Russian Irina, a Basque nature name, and Sanskrit choice meaning "earth".

Although Ira is a retirement-account acronym in the US, it's back on the table for those seeking a short biblical name for their sons. A musical namesake is lyricist Ira Gershwin (born Israel), a literary one is Ira Levin, while Ira Sachs is a film director. There are also two prominent Iras hosting NPR radio shows.

Across the pond in the UK, however, Ira likely receives less use currently as the initials IRA are associated with the Irish Republican Army, which could make it feel like a political choice.

Flynn, a charming Irish surname, is still used only quietly, despite its easygoing, casual cowboy charm, unlike Finn which is a star of this genre. Flynn was the choice of Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr for their baby boy, and is also the middle name -- used as his first -- of a son of Miranda's fellow supermodel Elle Macpherson, of Gary Oldman's son Gulliver and Marley Shelton's daughter West.
Flynn Rider (born Eugene Fitzherbert) is the dashing animated hero of the Disney film "Tangled." On TV's "Breaking Bad", Flynn was what young Walter Jr. tried to rename himself. The name was long associated with the swashbuckling Errol Flynn, inspiration of the phrase "in like Flynn." Some may connect this name to controversial former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn
Flynn entered the U.S. Top 1000 in 2011, and is a highly popular choice in Australia and New Zealand.

Paula still seems somewhat stuck in the era of duo Paul and Paula bopping out the song "Hey, Paula." Two pronunciations are possible—the English "PAW-la" and the Portuguese "POW-la."
Modern bearers of the name include singer-songwriter Paula Abdul and comedian Paula Poundstone, as well as a character on My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Paula is still a common choice in Puerto Rico.
With the trend toward boyish nicknames for girls, we can't help but wonder whether there will be a new generation of little girls names Paulie or Pauley, both fresher than Paula.

Zechariah is actually the original Biblical form of the name more often found these days as Zachariah, probably because of the popularity of Zachary. People are going to have trouble getting Zechariah because they won't understand the Zech part. This name, in whatever form, begs to be shortened in the modern world to Zach (or Zac or Zack).

A favorite in England and Wales, Darcy is a unisex option with delicacy, grace, and strength. Associated with classic literary and courtesy thanks to Jane Austen's hero, Mr. Darcy, and Bridget Jones's Mark Darcy, its image was partly transformed by English ballerina Darcey Bussell, who helped popularize it for girls.

A name with multiple meanings, Darcy can be considered an anglicization of either d'Arcy, a French name associated with the town of Arcy, or of O'Dorchaidhe, an Irish surname meaning "dark one". It can also be spelled as Darcey, Darcie, and Darci too, all of which have featured in the England and Wales Top 1000 at least once since the 90s.

Darcie is currently the most popular spelling in the UK, appearing in the Top 100, while Darcy ranks in the Top 150 and Darcey in the Top #400. There's also Darcie-Mae in the latter half of the charts, along with Darcie-Rae, Darcie-Leigh, Darcie-Anne, Darcie-Rose, and Darcia which are all given to a handful of girls each year.

In Australia, Darcy leans masculine and frequently appears in the Top 100 for boys, while in the US, Darcy recently re-entered the popularity characts girls after a 30 year absence.

Notable Darcys include the character Darcy Olsson of the TV show and graphic novel series, Heartstopper, the actress Darcy Rose Byrnes, and young social media star, Darcy Jane Pentland.

The most common form of Damir is of Slavic origins, deriving from the elements da, meaning "give" or "take," and mir, "peace." It's also seen as a variation of the Turkish name Demir, meaning "iron".

Damir is very common in Central Asia and Turkic Russia. In Russia, the name has also been used by Communist parents as an acronym for a phrase meaning "long live the world revolution."

A rising choice in the US, it may also be considered an Anglicization of the Arabic Zamir, meaning "heart, mind, conscience", and pronounced as "da-MEER" by Arabic speakers.

Appearing in the US Top 1000 and popular among Spanish speaking families, Arely may be one of two things: a twist on the Hebrew masculine name, Areli, or a shortened form of the Spanish Araceli.

If you choose to relate it to its Hebrew origins, Arely means "lion of God" and appears in the Bible on a minor character. Pronounced as ah-REE-lye, it is reminiscent of Eli, Ariel, and Malachi.

If you choose to see it as a contracted form of Araceli, then it has the celestial meaning "sky altar" and it is likely this origin that Hispanic parents had in mind when choosing it. In this case, the pronunciation would be ah-reh-LEE.

Also spelled as Areli, it is the Arely spelling that currently makes the charts in the US, given to around 260 babies in a recent year.

Since Aurelius was given the supermodel seal of approval by Elle Macpherson, it has joined Augustus as an ancient Roman name that feels usable today. Slightly mystical and magical with a golden hue, Aurelius is grounded by its similarity to other popular options like August, Atlas, and Elias.
In ancient Roman history, the name is associated with Marcus Aurelius, a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, the last of the so-called "Five Good Emperors." He is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers. He granted his name en masse to citizens of the empire who didn't have one, making Aurelius a common and default nomen (family name) towards the later years of the empire.

Rarely used in the US before the 2000s, Aurelius began to climb in 2010, perhaps because model Elle Macpherson was back on the runway and hosting Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model, reminding parents of her son's name. Alternatively, its rise may have more to do with its appearance in the popular series, The Hunger Games.

Aurelius made its debut to the US charts in 2025 when it was given to 230 boys compared to 190 the year prior. In joined its variants Aurelio and Aurelia, both of which also rose up the ranks.

Musician Sean Ono Lennon and model Charlotte Kemp Muhl named their son Aurelius in 2026.

Palmer is a name that derives from the fact that pilgrims often carried palms, thus the double meaning. It's a fresher sounding twist other surname style names, such as Spencer, Carter, Porter and Parker. Despite its long history as a boy's name, Palmer has recently been more successful on the US girls' charts, where it is solidly within the Top 300. Nevertheless, Palmer did make an appearance on the US Top 1000 names for boys in 2023, solidifying it as a potential choice for any gender.
