GenevieveReine's list "Names from Whats My Line" of 20 great name ideas: Jan - Sandy!

Names from Whats My Line

Names that appeared on What's My Line, a panel show that ran from 1950 to 1967 (left off at 19 Aug 1962)

A standard form of John in Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Czech, Polish, Slovene, German, and Catalan. Properly pronounced yahn (in most of these languages), most Americans will still equate it with the Brady Bunchesque girls' name Jan, which is now officially extinct.

About 70 baby boys were named Jan in the US last year, and we'll bet many of those are pronounced the American way, rhyming with can.

Janet started as a pet form of Jane but has long been used independently. Jane is a feminine form of John, which derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan. Janet can also be considered a variation of Jeannette, a derivative of Joan and another feminization of the name John.

Five hundred years ago Janet was a royal favorite in Scotland, where it remains a common name. Here in the US, however, Janet has been on a downhill slide since the 1960s, with Grandma Janet now knitting booties for baby Janae. Or even, increasingly, Jane.
There have been several Janets recently involved in US government, Janet is a leading member of the Jackson family, and Janet Evanovich is a bestselling author; and in the past there have been first Best Actress Oscar winner Gaynor, Psycho actor Janet Leigh, and the mother of Jackie Kennedy.
There are several attractive foreign versions that might prove appealing alternate namesakes for Gran Jan—Gianetta, Zaneta, Janneth, Sinead or Janica.

Pervasive in all Spanish-speaking cultures, Juanita, like Juana, has not emigrated.

Lili has been blooming in many forms for a couple of decades now. The Lili version will surely get more attention now that the Duke and Duchess of Susses, aka Harry and Meghan, are using is as a short form for their daughter Lilibet Diana's name. Lili makes the slight and light though that is not necessarily a bad thing; it also mutes the name's floral identity and gives it a cute and quirky repetitive spelling, ala Coco and Lulu. A famous German song is titled Lili Marlene.

Mona had more than a moment in the sun, peaking in 1950 at Number 230 but falling off the Top 1000 completely in the late 1980s. Its similarity to the word "moaner" undercuts the appeal of its simplicity. In one recent year, fewer than 100 baby girls received the name, and we don't see it reviving any time soon.

Roberta has been one of the most successful feminization names, up at #64 in 1936. It's a name that's found all over children's lit, often nicknamed Bobbie or Robbie, though Bertie is another possibility. Notable bearers have included singers Roberta Flack and Roberta Peters--plus it's the birth name of Joni Mitchell.

Selma has recently been given a more youthful spin via actresses Selma Blair and Salma Hayek. But while Selma has not yet become popular again in the US, it is widely used in both Sweden and Norway.

Selma won a Nobel Prize via Swedish author Selma Lagerlof, the first woman to win for literature. And the city of Selma, Alabama is famous as the starting point for the Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. The 2014 film Selma, based on the marches, gave the name a slight boost in the same year.

Caesar, the name of the greatest Roman of them all, is rarely used outside Latino families, where the Cesar spelling is preferred —as in activist Chavez and Dog Whisperer Millan. Its original meaning is debated — either "long-haired", "blue-gray" (as in eyes), or "cut" (because Julius Caesar was supposedly born by cesarian section) — it came to be the title to denote all Roman emperors and it is from the name Caesar that many other European royal titles are derived, including Kaiser and Tsar.
In antebellum America, Caesar became a common name among enslaved people, along with such other classical appellations as Cato and Octavius.

Brigitte is the French version of the ancient Irish Brighid long associated with 1950s sex symbol Brigitte Bardot. If you want to pronounce Brigitte the French way, it's brih-ZHEET.

Thor, the powerful name of the Norse god of thunder, strength and rain, would make a bold statement. Long a comic book staple, Thor has now invaded the big screen, and could land on birth certificates as well.
Thor Heyerdahl was a famous Norwegian anthropologist/adventurer, author of the book Kon Tiki.
In Norse mythology, Thor was the son of Odin--another crossover name possibility--who was sometimes referred to as Bjorn in Old Norse poetry. Tor is a popular variation (which is also the Hebrew name of a bird that symbolizes the arrival of spring).

Cliff is a familiar, timeless short form -- never too popular, yet widely known -- that you might also think of as a geographical name ala Vale or Field.

Doris had long been on our so-far-out-it-will-always-be-out-for-babies list, and seemed to be written there in indelible ink. But there are signs of a sea change, that Doris could profit from the revivals of Dorothy and Dorothea.
She may not look it now, but Doris was considered the paragon of grace when she was part of a group of s-ending names (Phyllis, Frances) fashionable in the 1920s, and it got another shot of life when attached to the perky Doris Day in the fifties. In classical Greek mythology, Doris is the daughter of Oceanus, god of the sea, who gave birth to fifty golden-haired sea nymphs.

Doris

One of the most classic smoosh names around, and very international, too.

The meaning of Marie is uncertain, but theories include "drop of the sea" (from Hebrew roots mar "drop" and yam "sea"); "bitter" (from Hebrew marah "bitterness"); and "beloved" (from the Egyptian root mr).

Dropping the final "k" of Frederick definitely makes it a more user-friendly classic boys' name. It streamlines it and also hints at Frederic's status as a French variation of the Germanic Frederick. Either way, this is a strong classic to consider if you're not afraid of a little dusty residue.

Pauline had its moment of glory a century ago, when movie audiences were thrilling to the silent serial The Perils of Pauline, released in 1914. A Top 50 name in the US between 1908 and 1930, it fell off the charts in the 1990s — but with the interest in Marjorie, Josephine, Polly, and Jacqueline, could Pauline be ready for revival?

While Pauline is a French femininization of the classic Paul, it was actually favored in the US before its French heyday. As it left the charts in America, the UK, and Switzerland, it spiked upwards in France, making the Top 10 in the 90s and remaining in the Top 100 until as recently as 2018. Now on decline there, could that be another sign it's ready for reconsideration elsewhere?
Meaning "small" or "humble", Pauline was given to 56 babies in the US in a recent, revealing its stayed fairly steady in its usage since the 2000s. Similar Paulina is now preferred, given to 346 girls in the same year.
Pauline was the name of Napoleon Buonaparte's favorite sister, and in literature there is a Pauline in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale and in Sir Walter Scott's The Fortunes of Nigel.Vin Diesel chose this name for his daughter in a poignant tribute to his late friend and costar, Paul Walker.

The pronunciation of the name varies depending on language and location. English speakers are likely to be familiar with paw-LEEN, while in French, it's said with both syllables emphasized (PAW-LEEN). You may also hear pow-LEE-nuh (German) and pow-LIN (Swedish).

Seraphine is the Gallic version of the angelic name Seraphina. But while Seraphina has been rising rapidly since Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck chose it for their second daughter, Seraphine has been largely ignored, though we believe the French vowel-sound ending will soon be more stylish than the a-endings that have predominated in girls' names for years.

Another cousin, Seraphita, is the heroine of an eponymous 1837 Balzac novel.

This feminization of Anthony, like other early French forms, such as Babette and Nanette, is not heard as often as it once was, but it could be time for a reappraisal of this delicate Gallic choice.
The name is most familiar via the ill-fated Marie Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Antoinette Giry is a character in Phantom of the Opera. And the theatrical Tony awards were named for theatrical actress and director Antoinette Perry (born Mary Antoinette).
Other options: Antonia and Antonella.

Short for Brunhilda, the operatic Valkyrie of Teutonic legend, Hilda still has not quite shaken off that image that image. Though with the resurgence of Matilda, she might just have a bit of a comeback.
On its softer side, St. Hilda is the patron saint of learning, culture and poetry; Hilda Doolittle was the poet known as H. D. Hilda was a Top 100 name in the early decades of the twentieth century, hanging in until 1986--her image not helped by the green-complected comic strip character Broom-Hilda. Still popular in Sweden, where she now ranks at Number 77.

Nickname name in the era of Grease. Sandy fits well in the era of boyish nicknames for girls - a la Scottie and Stevie - or as an alternative to the rapidly rising Goldie. While it peaked in 1960, Sandy is still given to about 60 baby girls each year.
